Roller furler and towing

Tedd, I have the smaller Mac (21) and also built my raising system out of stuff in my shop. It's still a bit labor intensive even without the jib hanked on to the furler. I usually take the jib off when travelling/getting ready for winter etc, but have towed with it attached as well. My sailmaker says not to do so, but for those instances I put at least a partial sleeve around the leading end of the furler/drum and as much of the actual sail as possible. I have a 2X3 bolted into the bottom of the mast to to support the furler drum and excess lead/forestay during travel. I leave a bungee for the furler to the mast about head height and it slides along the side of the boat while raising and we unclip it when the mast is upright. Two people minimum to step the mast, though.

Here is how I raise my mast single hand. This mast weighs about 40% more than a Mac26 mast. The sail is on the furler all of the time.

Really like the idea of running the furler up the gin pole -- very clerver!
