My OEM Racor 110 install is 8”-10” above the tank top and does not have the recommended racor check valve in the fuel line. It does have a fuel shut off at the tank supply side line which I close when changing filters. This retains fuel in the suction side. I also refill the racor bowl with diesel when reinstalling. I think it depends on your engine, the Yanmar 3JH4E seems to spit any air in the lines to the return and fires right up after filter change.

My Racor 500 sits about 2 plus feet above my fuel tank. There is the engine fuel pump and a manual lift pump, no auxiliary electrical fuel pump in the system.
  1. At filter change I drain any water or debris from the bottom of the filter and discard.
  2. I close the fuel line stopping the fuel from draining back towards the tank.
  3. I open the top of the unit and remove the dirty filter.
  4. I slip the clean filter into the housing.
  5. I pour diesel into the unit top to refill any fuel that was displaced by removing the old filter (about a pint).
  6. I remove and replace the O rings provided with the new filter.
  7. Tighten the top back on the unit and open the fuel lines.
  8. Start the engine. No priming needed. Total time less than 10 minutes while at sea.
At least that is my best time.
