Alden 38' Challenger yawl Rockport Harbor
Shake down sail: Beginning of last week we had the heat on in our house (honest). At the end of the week, we had the AC on (also true),...

Yeah I know SBO Southerners,..."You guys have no idea!!!"

Summer came on like a blast furnace on our coast. I was sweating bullets getting the boat underway in the windless harbor. Once outside, a gentle sea breeze (southerly direction), 4 to maybe 7 knots, lightly ruffled the surface of Penobscot Bay. The zephyr turns the surface of the water a deep, dark, blue.

Bring the bow onto the wind, kill the engine, adjust sheets, sit back. Relief.

Like a tall cool drink or a dip in a mountain lake; moist, cool, North Atlantic chilled air washes over the decks and cockpit.

The boat felt light and nimble with all the power she needed to ride into the breeze.

To stay cool, we sailed for our islands. Always reassuring to see they don't change.

A few island boys of summer.
