Hudson river current

The broken ice lets you "see" how strong the current can be at times.

Now, think about tacking against that current with light winds :-(

Due to the fact that the Hudson has tides all the way to Albany, NY we have current running both directions. Current changes 2X a day

As far as I know you are not allowed to sail on the Hudson "sail-only" unless you have an outboard just for that reason. Might be wrong.....

Not quite sure what the law is pertaining to the Hudson, Coast guard regs required some boats to have 2 means of propulsion. Sail + (outboard or paddles).
Motor boat -- paddles. But there is some size limitations ...

FYI, the tides go beyond Albany to the Troy dam.
