Aptly named race; it snowed all the night before and it’s 31f at the start. Our mortal nemesis ‘catapult’ the j70 pulls out at the last moment (ice and cold), but we were ready for them and everyone else and our prep showed. We nail every aspect of the W/L 2-lap race race, and take line honors and win by 6 minutes corrected.

Who else is still cold weather racing??

It was in the 50’s and saw 30 knots apparent on Galveston Bay yesterday when we raced in the “Peanut Regatta”. That was about 20 degrees below normal, though.

And 22 teams were also on Galveston Bay for the J105 North Americans.

It's been probably 30 years since I raced with ice on the bow rail. I have no plans to ever do it again.

The harsh bite of winter took hold here in South Florida today. At 65 degrees my bare feet froze up while walking to the end of the driveway. It was difficult to breath with the 25knot winds and so i hurried back inside. I was disoriented as the air in the house was warmer than outside.

Finally, the FL sailing season has begun!

It's supposed to get all the way down into the 50's tonight, here on the east coast.

I feel your pain. ;-)

The key to this game is great gloves. If your fingers are frozen nothing else matters, it’s game over. My choice du jour is the Henri Lloyd Cobra winter.

Jackdaw,
That ought to be in some bible in at least 3 languages somewhere. At least it should be.

And on the 7th day, in the cold vastness of the heavens the Lord breathed on his cold fingers saying thus, good enough.

One of my sometime-crewmember who is from Sweden reminds me often of an old Scandinavian saying:

‘There is no such thing as bad weather. Just bad clothing choices.’

Gloves? Really? Like, gloves & a bikini would cut it?

Boots mean more to me than gloves. Bibs, a smock top & a good hat are a minimum on top of that. Good under-layers of wool, or it's synthetic cousin, are pretty important too. & yes... the right gloves are also good to have.

Edit:
& let's not forget wrist seals, a neck seal, & maybe a scarf.

If I'm out there in that kind of weather, I want to make the Michelin Man look like he's been on a diet.

If your toes are frozen you suffer but you can still sail; trim, use a winch, tie a knot, etc. if your fingers are frozen, you're not a sailor, you're a passenger.

Plus - Boots are easy. I’ve got my Sperry waterproof boots and a pair of smart wool socks I’m sorted for almost every possible condition. Gloves are much more challenging - depending on rain, snow, cold, on the level of dexterity needed. I have five different pairs of gloves depending on conditions and what I need to do on the boat.

And for some reason I think Maine Sail is still wearing shorts and flip flops.

I am curious if you are more likely to call a race in more conservative conditions for safety reasons? MOB in the middle of the summer does not normally mean death. As the temps drop, the survival time in the water goes down pretty quick.

You take more precautions for sure. the mandatory PFD flag is up. And the PRO has wider discretion to call races. Several fleets discussed going non-spin (some boats did) to keep crew off the foredeck. The j70 didn't sail. It was WYCs last official race of the season; all following races are 'non-sanctioned', see poster below.

Two years ago we pulled a sailor who was soloing a Flying Scott (funny, but it was the Swedish guy I mentioned earlier) out of the water after he capsized. It was the week before thanksgiving. He was COLD.

Must've made a bad clothing choice? ;)

"2016 Last Boat In Honors: Endurance"... Fitting.
