Have a Catalina 380 and when motoring there is white steam coming from the exhaust. Is this normal? Also I normally motor cruise at 2800 RPM at 6.2knots with a 3 blade Variprop. If I increase the RPM's the temp gauge quickly goes up. Was hoping to be able to cruise at a higher speed asd as most 38' boats do.

It sounds as if your mixing elbow is probably corroded and clogged up... not letting the cooling water run thru the system fast enough... remove it and clean it out, or replace it if its beyond repair, which is a normal thing if its old.

What engine?

Universals do NOT have the exhaust elbow issues that Yanmars do.

Two completely different animals.

2001 with Yanmar. Was thinking the same thing. the increased temp at higher rpm's also was concerning. There are times with headwinds when I would like to run at 3000rpm but the temp is in the 200 degree range.

Hi Jeff, have you cleaned out the basket filter under the aft bed? Is the seacock fully open? Our motor doesn't go over 190 even if we are at 3500 rpm on our 2002 yanmar 3jh3e. By the way,we will be coming to Oakville on Sept long weekend. Would love to see what you have done to your boat. This is only our 2nd summer with ours.
