After two hours of running the motor the fresh water in cooling system is gone and motor over heats. I don't see any leaks on the out side. Saltwater is running through fine. Could I be loseing it through the heat exchanger and it's being flushed out with the sea water? Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions? Doug Wilson #227 Yankee

heat exchanger

Hi Doug, You are correct, as long as you don't have any water/coolant in your oil and your compression checks out ok on all cylinders. (bad head gasket). Pull the heat exchanger and have it pressure tested. You didn't say what engine you have, but there are only two places to loose your fluid besides the obvious hose leaks, and that is your head gasket or a cracked head and your heat exchanger. You can have a bad head gasket and not have water in your oil, this will show up as white steam in your exhaust and bad compression on one or more cylinders. If it is a gasoline engine (A4) you simply pull the spark plugs and look for the one that is steamed cleaned. Good luck.
