checking bilge pump cycles w/impulse counter

Hello, does anybody know how to hook up an impulse counter to the bilge pump to monitor cycles?
The resetable counter works each time it is connected to 12vdc but I can't seem to find a hook up that will operate the counter and the pump. What am I missing?
