Battery and/or Fuel tank mounted in the Lazarette?

I own a 1988 Mac 26D. I just bought a mew Honda motor with electric start so I need to have a battery in close proximity to the motor. The logical choice would be the Lazarette. Has any one done this mod to a Mac 26D or maybe later models had a factory design change to do this?

In addition does any one have their fuel tank in the Lazarette while underway? If not, why not? (I'm thinking safety concerns) I sailed with a guy today who said the fuel tank on his 26S was in the Lazarette.

Just checking to see if putting one or both of those items in the Lazarette is done and if not why not.

Thanks,

MM

A well done mod by the P.O. (you don’t hear that often) of my 1990D is a fixed fuel tank in the laz. It’s about 10 gallons, fills from the rear deck.

Any tank in the lazarette should be vented and .....

.... you should also be able to ventilate the compartment if there are fumes.

Mount the battery forward and invest in the proper size wiring for the run to the outboard so you don't have the battery in the same compartment with the fuel.

I've seen some people use one of the small portable tanks and then use a hose with a quick release like you would use on a compressor air hose to vent the tank outside the compartment. I went with a much larger tank for the needs I had. Don't need anything that large for most sailing situations,

Hey Sumner, I noticed in one or two of your Bahamas trip photos you had modified your outboard motor mounting arrangement. I just got an 8hp Honda extra long shaft and I think I could lift the motor up a few inches and get away with it. Do you have pics on that mod? I always like seeing your solutions to making our Macs better than the original "good enough".

The mount raises the outboard about 5 inches but the outboard is an extra-long shaft so it is still in the water about the same as a long shaft outboard. This hasn't been a problem lake sailing and in Florida's coastal waters but was a couple times on crossings in the Bahamas where the waves were steeper and higher. In those conditions I probably had the motor cavitate briefly 6-9 times. Not a big deal and no harm but if I was to be in those conditions again I'd remove the mount and put the outboard in the well and deal with the limited movement. I made the mount in a way that it can be removed in just a minute or so.

Except for those instances it has been a good mod as far as letting the outboard turn without restriction and getting the controls into a handier location. I wouldn't raise it though if it was a long shaft. Here is a link to the mod....
