Anecdotal reply...fellow skipper was stopped for a random CG inspection whereupon they found expired extinguishers. The CG secured his unsafe boat and ordered the skipper to the nearest port under CG escort to obtain current extinguishers before they would release him. Lesson learned. I check and rotate mine regularly to make sure they remain current lest I befall my fellow skipper's demise.

Thanks for the poignant reminder.

I made this video 2 years ago when the rules were updated…

I just had our refillable extinguishers ( two 5# and two 2.5#) re-certified by a local extinguisher shop. I know from experience that they will refuse to tag a bottle that's beyond the 'stamped' date.

Then I got my annual VSC inspection and sticker; extinguishers are on their check list, but only to check the number of bottles, and whether they are in the green.

Nice video Greg. Thanks for posting. Regarding your engine space Halon bottle. We have one that looks very similar, and the shop weighs the Halon and re-tagged it also. They will not, however, replace that exact chemical. There is a different chemical version available now that is approved, IIRC.

Regarding the dry powder bottles, I have been told to try and source the "marine" versions with the metal valve/handles. The plastic valve ones are said to be the disposable version and do cost less.

Darned re-tag dates are yearly.... it seems like kind of a regular income for the official extinguisher shops - with help from the insurance industry. That said, fire is such an extreme risk for a total loss, that the insurers do have reason to push for best preparation, IMHO.
