To Whom It May Concern

What is the best way to repair a window which has separated itself from the grey surrounding caulking. I believe they need to be rebedded. What is holding the windows into place. Any information would be greatly appreciated . Thank You

We have a 2000 model B321 so I assume the windows are similar.
Inside, pull off the plastic trim which is held in with velcro.
There are about 10 screws holding the window to the frame.
I got that far once, but could not quite figure out how to take the entire window out.
I know you have to be pretty gentle with the frames since they are hard to replace.

Thank you for your information. I was not aware that it was held by screws. I'm currently waiting for a 6 day weather window to re and re the window. I found surprisingly little information on the non lewmar window replacement. Again thank you for your information. John v

Hi Again cymeyer. I believe the windows in your 2000 are different from the 1995 model. The 2000 model seem to have a proper frame. The large side windows look very similar to the two windows on top of your cabin. Thank you again for your reopky. J

If you are referring to the fixed sidelights on either side of the cabin top, you are looking at a big job. I would talk to a local marina expert familiar with rebidding those sidelights.

I believe you will find that they are held in place with an adhesive, similar to what is used to hold car windows in place. Powerful stuff, and not very forgiving. After the glass installed the silver bead you see is then added. The seal is provided by both, so repairing only the silver bead won't necessarily solve the problem, but is worth a try.

I would carefully cut out the silver bead with a razor blade removing as much as possible. Then mask both the deck side and glass side of the opening. Then run a bead of silver caulk. At the risk of being accused of heresy, I would use silver colored exterior housing caulk. Run a nice bead and smooth it with a wet finger. After it sets up remove the masking tape and remove any excess.

I am guessing the silver trim painted around the outer edge of the deck side light has probably faded away. Repainting it before caulking may be a good idea. Carefully masking the area with those nice round corners will take some time, but once sprayed with a good quality paint will make it look like new. Paint it after removing the caulk bead. Be sure to prep the area to be pained wit a bit of fine sandpaper.

There is a good chance this will stop the leak. And the side lights will look like new.

Chuck

Dear CE Slaw

Thank you so very much for your long and detailed response to my inquiry and the time you have taken doing this. You have exactly addressed my concerns. I will attack the problem as you have suggested. Again thank you so very much for your comments. John v EN ROUTE Beneteau 321

Hey CESLAW,

What kind of paint would you recommend we use to repaint the siliver around the windows? Mine could use a nice touch up, but not sure what to use....

Chris

A good quality spray enamel, like Rustoleum, is probably fine. The issue is color. There are many shades of silver, you need something sedate, not too much bling.

I have been using Eastwood products lately with excellent results. Yes, I know it is an automotive supplier, but the colors are great. "Detail gray" might be a good choice.

Picking up several cans of spray and shooting some test patters may be a good idea, especially if you are not reprinting everything. Www.eastwood.com is web site.

Worried about spraying with 'over spray'. I may try brushing.

It is really tough to get a smooth finish with a brush. Masking with blue 3M tape over the plexiglas glass works great. Masking paper going out a couple of feet should be sufficient. You only want to lightly mist the paint - a very light coat. Let it set up a few minutes and then another light coat. It will look good.

Crazy part is the prep will take an hour but the painting about 15 seconds.

Thanks, CESLAW, I will try the spraying. Has to look better than what I have now!

Hi, look into the site history, because I posted a complete step-by-step guide on how to do this job a few years ago. I did it twice on my 1998 B352. My installation is still holding up :D!

Re: I have done this job - twice!

John, search site for "Leaking Port Lights". The date of my post was 4/29/2010. I am sorry I don't know how to link this thread to the previous discussion. The method works, but it is not a simple job. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, Murray.
Found it and here it is (just copied and pasted it). I also learned that when I click on your name on the recent post, I could find all your prior posts.....

I have repaired both my fixed ports on my B352. You need to remove the plexiglass, and scrap and sand (lightly) off all the old adhesive, of the frame and the glass. Get two tubes of Dow 957 (black) and the primer - you'll require one tube of 957 per window. Mask all around the frame (inside and out) and the window. Now the tricky part. Insert some small lifters (1/8") and float the glass on the 957 (the whole tube), push down on the glass, squeezing out the excess 957 - down to the lifters. Now remove/clean away excess and get a smooth bead around the frame/window gap. Do the same on the inside. Carefully remove the masking tape right away (fix the bead, if necessary). Put a little weight on the window and leave it alone for a few days. I think it is easier if the weather is cool, as it gives you more time to work the 957 - also you'll need about six hands to control the mess. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Murray
