After an eleven hour grueling trip. Our American 26 is home. Digging out of the ice and snow was brutal. It took my Ford F-250 4X4 and the Sellers Dad's Chevy Silverado 4X4 chained together and the seller cleaning the alley with his F-250 4X4 and blade to get it out.

Then we had a very slow trip home. 35-45 max high way speed. It pulled hard. Luckily we had sprung for new tires, so at least that was one thing less to worry about. The Wheel hubs all had zerts so we loaded up with Marine grease on the bearings. The must be good, they never got warm. I repeatedly stopped and checked all connections and tie downs and ball tightness, needless to say I was a little paranoid.

Here she is ready to roll home.

Part of the snow mess.

On the way...

:D:D:D:D

Some other stuff I got along with the boat. Honda 100 10 Hp, never been in the water. 14" Band saw never been used. The sellers Grandpa loved to buy stuff, and then never or only slightly used it. There was a brand new Canoe hanging from the Garage ceiling that had never been used. Bought, brought home and hung up and there it stayed. Amazing...

Have a good night.

Tom,

Congratulations on your new mistress! She's a pretty boat. Don't be afraid to trailer her though. I have a 25 footer that I tow and launch every weekend (just about). I take her through the busy steets of Portland Maine with no problem. And 60 MPH is fine with her too. (I'm not a yahoo or anything) Enjoy!

Yesterday, I reached my limit of frustration. After 2 weeks, the ice in the cockpit did seem to be going down a little. However I could see no evidence that the resulting water was draining out the exterior drain and down to the ground.

This is how it looked on Monday of this past week.

Yesterday, I took an ice pick over and found that the snow had melted off the benches and that the ice was an inch or so below the bench edges. I started chipping the ice out with the pick and dug down at the location where I thought the drain came out of the cockpit and couldn't find the opening. What I did find was either cushions or a life ring or other kind of fabric covered foram that made strange noises when I poked it with the ice pick. I probably removed at least 100 lbs of ice and still could not see just what was buried in the ice. Where the water is going, I have no clue. Probably into the interior of the boat where I am afraid water has been going along with freezing up all winter.

On one hand I can hardly wait for the weather to get warm enough to thaw the ice so I can get in the boat and see what is going on. On the other, I am afraid to see the potential damage that my imagination is conjuring up in my mind.

Don't know whick is worse. I guess the reality will probably not be as bad as my mind has been picturing it.

Worse case is that when I do see the inside, if it is too bad, I can trailer the boat to the dump and off load it and at least I have a trailer sailer trailer to go and get my next boat with.

Oh' well, will just have to wait.

I am not good at waiting....

Life goes on....

Did you get some rub marks from the tie down straps? I am still trying to find a way to avoid them when towing my O'Day 25. I have tried the large swim noddles on the strap but it does not work very well. I did run 4X4 across the cockpit that held the straps off the boat but it puts me over the legal limit for the width of a vehicle.

Throw a rag under the straps and twist them a couple times. There should be at least two twists along each stretch of strap. The twists will help prevent the straps from vibrating so much, and that alone reduces the rub marks quite a bit. The rag will prevent the rub marks completely.

RECESS, Don't know about strap rub marks yet. Haven't taken the straps off. Still waiting for the ice to melt. So I can get inside and take inventory.

Rub Marks right now are not a top concern. Ice and water are #1 right now. May end up scrapping the boat if the dammage is too severe.

Will up date as more becomes evicent.

Tom hang in there. One good thing with a glass boat is most everything is rounded and tapered in order for the glass pieces that make up the boat to come out of their molds. Hopefully any ice that has formed will not be able to exert the same damage it would as it expands as it would in something with square edges.

I'll bet any damage to the boat is old damage that was there before you bought it. I'm personally hoping for the best for you and your boat,

Sum

Thanks Guy, I am just in a depressed mood right now. Normally bright sun and warmth alleviate that. In this case, what will change it to the better is to be able to KNOW what I really have. Warts and all.

Have a good one.

I've had a cockpit full of ice a couple of times and no damage was done. I got the ice out by chipping at it with a cold chisel and a hammer. Once you get a section of ice cleared away all the way down to the sole then it's just a matter of chipping off one chunk of ice at a time and tossing it over the side.

I've used mechanic's rags and old sports sox for strap protection, and they work well.

Tom, what's directly under the cockpit of your boat? Is that area accessible? If it isn't it's worth cutting a small inspection port from the aft bunk area to look under the cockpit.

If the under-cockpit area is dry, and the cockpit floor is firm, not bouncy or soft, then things are good.

On our boat, the cockpit floor had a little softness and the flotation foam was wet, due to water entry from a rotted rear bulkhead. Even so, we sailed her for two years like this, before I tackled the big fix last year. It wasn't that hard to do, once I got started.

Kenn, Don't have an answer to that question yet. So far I have not been able to get in to the interior of the boat, because of the ice and the cold weather. It is just this weekend that we are having serious warming and melting. I will go over tomorrow and try and seriously get into the boat. I know that there are quarter berths that go back under the seats of the cockpit. That should let me have a look under the cockpit.

This shows the layout.

To Prevent Those Strap Marks

Those fuzzy rugs off the bathroom floor work great.

Don't tell my wife though she blamed the kids when it went missing.

Tom,

I would not worry too much. These boats are really durable and easily fixed.

I have tried rags over the tie straps. I had one twist. My biggest problem is an O'Day 25 is built like a pregnant whale. It's sides bow out a little. That, and I painted it high gloss red and any little scratch shows big time.

I have been toying with the idea of Red. It is my favorite color. This year, I think all I am going to do is clean up the above the water, use a little polishing compound and a buffer and get her to shine again. Paint the bottom Navy Blue and a Red Waterline stripe.

Next year, I might look at the red.

Your boat is goregous.
