Jib Furlers for Trailarables

I am looking at potentially buying a jib furler for my 25' Lancer but I trailer it, so demasting is part of the game -- I am looking at the Harken small boat furler the cruising kit in particular that consists of the furling drum and swivel at top and the existing jib luff wire seems used to carry the headstay load -- seems it can only be used for furling and not for reefing.
Any comments on furling and reefers for trailerables would be appreciated and if anyone has experience with the furler I am looking at ....... that would really be great.

Furler not reefer

You got it in one, with this system being a furler not a reefer - that's a common mistake people make.

Furling vs. Reefing

Reefer: open or closed, no in between

Furler: limitless options for the amount of sail you want out: 100% to zero.

You've got it backwards, when you reef a sail, you have some out but not the whole thing...

Furler: open or closed, no in between

Reefer: limitless options for the amount of sail you want out: 100% to zero (sail shape starts to suffer after about 25-30% of the sail being reefed....gets baggy)

I think the Harkin small boat furler is the way to go on trailable boats. The wire in the luff of the sail allows you to bend the sail for storage as opposed to having a foil that the sail slides in, you don't want to bend the foil. The alternative is to disassemble the foil prior to dropping the mast. I have a Harkin small boat furler on my 216 and it works great, but I have a very small jib. What does Harkin recommend for your boat and the type of use you will put it to?

You can always store the furling foil along side the mast to protect it. This works better on fractional rigs, since the forestay is shorter. :)

Nobody mentioned CDI yet. I have a CDI FF2 on my Mac26S. I trailer my boat everytime I sail. Works good for me, haven't had any trouble with it! Could that be an option for you.

If I had it to do over I think I'd get the Shaefer Snapfurl cf-700 for boats 24'-28'. I think they cost more though.

No problem, common mistake

Seems like whenever I tell someone I have a Mac26, they think it's a motorsailar. Needless to say a 26S vs 26X or M is like comparing apples and oranges.

I have used CDI furlers on my current Hunter 26 and my previous Mac 25. The weight of the furling system makes it a bit more difficult to raise and lower the mast but it is worth it to be able to reef the headsail. I do not see a big advantage for a trailered boat to having a furling only system, if it cannot reef, and you trailer the boat so I would assume having the sail in the sun all summer is not an issue, why bother?

less about hiding behind a veil of anonymity you would have noticed. We might take you more serious if you id yourself and told us which version of a Mac you prefer and not just troll around stirring the pot.

Do not discount the Schaefer brand, they have a Snapfurl CF500 & Snapfurl CF700 both with a flexible foil for trailering. Schaefer Snapfurl also incorporates the use of the jib halyard for hoisting so you can tension the jib luff, also makes it easier to change out from jib to genoa on the fly. It is a bit pricier but you get what you pay for.

I have an old cdi on mine, but the tension joints are busted trying like hell to find new ones, on there site they say not available, any ideas anyone

What are tension joints? I don't think I have those on my CDI.

Have you contacted CDI? I was under the impression they provide a lifetime warranty.

think thats what they are called, little plastic like things that join the alumanum peices together, does that help, and yes, these parts are not available and was told the warranty is for original buyer, of course lol,

I just read in the manual I posted there is a
LIMITED 6-YEAR WARRANTY​
The Flexible Furler is warranted to remain functional for 6
years from date of purchase. You must be the original
purchaser of the unit. If, during this period, any part becomes
non-functional, CDI will repair or replace it, free of charge,​
except for the freight.

yea mine is old, but works great, i may try and make something, they are costly buggers lol, if you go on there site you will see the difference

Advice

Just be careful when raising the mast with the furler for the first time. The stick on the L25 is pretty big and we were so focused on dealing with it that the furler drum got in the way at the last second as the mast went vertical. Caught it, but bent the tabernacle. :doh:I should have secured it out of the way, but that was in my early days. Now I always try to take a few extra minutes to think things through step by step. Saves on the headaches!
