I stumbled upon an LED Puck light fixture at Home Depot last night.
In single pack: $15. In a three pack :$30.

It makes a decent amount of white (cool) light.
While it's sold for 120vac usage, I noticed it came with a wall-wart.
Lo and behold... 12 vac out of the wart.

I've had it running on the workbench supply today at 13 vdc.
It draws only 35 ma (.035 A).

You mean it is 12 VDC out of the wall wart... right?? I wouldn't try running LEDs on 12 VAC..

Do they have a switch???

I have the exact same ones. Don't worry about 12V DC or 12VAC. I cut the lines from the wall wart and connected them directly to the battery.
My rational was that diodes are made to ignore the negative side of AC anyway, so feeding them DC is all the same, though they should be sensitive to positive and negative cables being switched, these are not.
I installed them in my boat, a C30 which has a pretty big cabin for a 30'er. The lights are almost bright enough to read by when you are not directly under them anywhere in the cabin and just bright enough to read by if you are directly under them. They are not sensibulbs but for the price I was very happy. Also I was very pleased with the color, but some may still consider them too white.

Oh yeah, and I ran that switch over by the comanion way so I can just reach in and flip them on from the cockpit.

It's AC

No, the wart's AC. I just looked again to be sure.

The LEDs mount on a PC board.
On the back is a DIP bridge rectifier.
Along with some SMT resistors for current limiting, and a cap.

No switch though.

What I'm thinking of is four of these around my quarter berth.
Supply them all through an LM-7809 regulator with a pot on it's ground lead for dimming.

After playing with it today, it's decidedly not in the reading lamp class.
But a few together would take the gloom out of the cave of a aft berth on the H34.

Do they have a switch???

The only thing I'd think about AC on LEDs is maybe some flicker.

With tri-color LEDs one of the operating modes is applying AC.
Forward bias - color 1 Reverse bias - color 2 AC- color 3

Actually, designing them with the rectifier in the circuit board makes them a lot easier to wire in the boat, since they're not polarity sensitive due to the design...makes the people hacking with them have a much easier time. :)

Bob when you say a voltage regulator and a pot, are you going to change the voltage going to the LED's? I thought they were voltage sensitive. You are obviously circuit savy, I am more fluid dynamics and mechanical design. Please explain to me in a Sesame Street level language what you intent to do, I ouwld like to put some in my V-berth and dim them if I could.
Also, there wasn't a switch in the package?

They do something similar with the OGM Trianchor/strobe masthead light—which has two leads and a ground, Power one lead, it's a tricolor, power the other it's an anchor light, power both—it's a strobe.

The only thing I'd think about AC on LEDs is maybe some flicker.

With tri-color LEDs one of the operating modes is applying AC.

Dimmer Schematic

Here's what I've come up with for the dimmer.

As to voltage. Most diodes (silicon, LED) only need .6V to turn on.
As you increase the voltage they turn on harder, draw more current.
In an LED that means getting brighter. That's why this fixture has the little
resistors on the board. To limit the current being drawn by each LED so it doesn't destroy itself.

I found this fixture stops making visible light at about 7v. At that voltage although you can't see any light, it still draws 10ma. At 9v it's bright enough that if I forget and let it turned on, I'll see it.

So here's how the circuit works.
The 7809 tries to regulate whatever comes in to 9V. By putting the pot in the ground lead, you can shift it's reference upward. Raise the resistance there, output voltage rises accordingly. On the bench I find with 2.5k (2500 ohms) it won't rise above 15v or so. Even with 25 applied to it. Safeguarding the light fixture. The caps are there to stop the 7809 from oscillating (something the 78xx and 79xx series will do).

What you end up with is at one end of the controls range the center pin is grounded and you get 9v. As you turn it, the output rises. And the LEDs get brighter. Viola... an LED dimmer.

If you build this, remember the pot has three legs. One of the outside leg needs to be shorted to the center. Which one decides which direction is brighter or dimmer.

If my memory serves correctly the 7809 will supply 1 A at 9v.
The fixture draw about 35 ma (.035 A) each.

You could do this with just a pot. But all the current of the fixtures would be running through that pot. This way the pot should last for a long time. Also the 7809 has it's own thermal and over current protection.

And of course the usual disclaimer that I ain't responsible if you burn something up applies.

I have another electrical question for you if you don't mind.
I have a rechargeable LED flashlight. The wall wart (maine sail has got us all saying that) says output 12V DC 500 mA. My question is this. The adapter's potential is 12 V, is the maximum amount of power that can be drawn from it 500mA? What if I charged my flashlight with a 1 Amp 12 V source? Does it harm the flashlight batteries or will the flash light only draw less than 500mA even though the source is higher?
What I want to do is run 12VDC to my Vberth and plug the flash light directly into that to charge it. That way I will always have a charged flashlight there. Is it ok to do this? I believe the flashlight turns off the charging when it gets to a certain point, because it has indicator lights that say when charging and when charged.

Should be OK

My guess is that the flashlight has it's own regulator.
If it's smart enough to shut off when fully charged, you're OK.
Make sure the polarity is correct.

The rating on the wall-wart is what it's able to deliver.
Before it starts burning up.

Oh yeah... wall-wart has become a generic phrase.
Don't know where it originated, but it's everywhere.

woops... Bob, maybe your circuit is better. The linear reguator used in its normal mode will have a "drop out" voltage and wont allow the output voltage to get to 12..

Ironically the whole idea of using a fixed three terminal regulator for a dimmer occurred to me while working on one of our TV transmitters.
Got called in the other night.
Lost an LM-317 in fact....no +12...control ladder all messed up.

The reason I went with the 7809 was simplicity.
I could set the low end voltage by picking the appropriate device (7805, 7808,7809).

I saw the same ones... and thought a moment, as I fondled them.... they are steel... hmmm.... rust???... What are your thoughts? Would be really nice if they made them cheaper and out of plastic...

Sorry to take so long to respond. I left the one that I have here at work.
And wanted to be sure from where I speak.

It appears to be entirely plastic.
There may be a slight metallic content in the plating.
But nothing ferrous at least

But I agree it very much looks like a steel fixture.

I'll have to recheck then. The Miss's and I saw then and thought, too cool. Took the pencil mag out of the pocket (on my key ring) and it stuck like glue. Maybe they changed since last fall? Makes it worth a stop on the next pass by HD.

If the housings are plastic...then it sounds like they're pretty ideal for use on a boat...
