I'm interested in getting with other local boats for day and weekend trips. Im feeling like it's time to "broaden" my horizons and adventure out of the Vashon Island area. I'm slipped at Point Defiance so if your looking for some to tag along let me know!

Not sure where we will sail this Summer. We moor in Everett and usually stay on the boat most of August. We also do some shorter trips. We should plan something.
We've enjoyed cruising to Olympia and Back a few times. They finally have diesel in Olympia. Last time we did that trip there was none south of the narrows.
It would be great to meet somewhere. There are a few of us on this board out of Everett.

Hey hey mister Mike Honcho... That sounds good. Follow our "https://forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?forums/pacific-north-west-cruisers.132/" forum right here. You'll catch the threads of us locals and our activities.
Not sure when you are thinking starting your adventures, but we are on our "Les and John's Excellent Adventure" which is a 6 Feb through 17 Feb 2019 Winter Cruise. We plan to leave Everett on the morning of the 6th and will be in Vancouver BC for the Boat Show. From there will be cruising back to Seattle to drop off a SBO member from NJ who is joining us for this Cruise. Along the way we hope to meet other SBO members and if they send me a PM indicating their intention to join us along the way a new SBO burgee will be on the boat for them.
Along the way we will be raising a glass:beer: or two staving off the cold and hopefully finding some great wind to sail among the islands and straits of the North Sound and Salish Sea.

Later in the year when the sun and warmer weather returns I would look forward to a meet up in the South Sound. Gig Harbor is one of the sites on my planning schedule.

Ken is a great sailor to meet up with. My Wife and I joined he and his wife in Poulsbo this past year. It was a great weekend and we got some fun photos...

Thanks John. There are lots of really great people to meet. John is one of them, Les Troyer as well.
One of the things we really enjoy is meeting the folks that surround us and this forum is full of really nice helpful people.

We have 500' of guest dock at RCYC in Portland. Drop in sometime and use your reciprocals............
:)

Admittedly it is a bit further for you than a "weekend" but exploring the Columbia River would be a fine vacation. Lots of parks, docks, and anchorages to try out.

On a delivery a few years ago, we filled up with diesel at Boston Harbor. Do they still have a fuel dock? (That's not far from Oly.)

Yes Boston Harbor has fuel, ice, restruant and some groceries. No Pumpout. They rebuilt some of their docks.

Me, Foss Waterway.
I'm in the Breakwater. I was kicking around the idea of going out today but the weather stations are showing zero wind. Do you know of any webcams for Commencement Bay?

Nice article in this month's Sea magazine about cruising the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Transiting the locks, Beacon Rock, etc. Only down side was from a stink potter.

Ice Harbor lock is an experience no one should miss. The downstream gate lifts over ?? (Over 70’) so this 100+ foot tall gate is above you as you enter from down stream, dripping water all over you (many many tons). The lift is about 100’ and fast so have knives ready at each floating bollard you “tie” to Incase it sticks (they do). What fun

Last time we were there Boston Harbor had no diesel (gas only) but Swantown has gas and diesel now.

Vashon Is. is hard to beat. Going north a bit, one can try Blake Is. There is a little marina that in the off-season should be easy getting a slip at but anchoring out is somewhat tough because of the steep fall-off of the bottom and no matter where one anchors there will be wave action, either from wind or wakes from passing boats. There are a few buoys.

Port Orchard should be within easy reach for a weekend but one has to time the currents for Rich Passage and getting around Vashon. Brownsville would be another nice option. Poulsbo for a long weekend with more current analysis required.

Olympia is nice, and then there is Oro Bay; however, there is really nothing there except for the Tacoma YC outstation but it's a good stop-over but not a lot of anchoring room. Good for going south, getting out Friday afternoon and anchoring, then going to Olympia on Saturday, return on Sunday, currents permitting.

Shelton: Now there is a challenge! Really really watch the chart, tides, and current. However, "down town" is right there with an easy walk. Otherwise, inspite of all the shoreline we have here, there are not that many 'good' or 'fun' destinations within a day sail or overnighter. Kingston? Winslow? Port Orchard? all have ferry wakes when anchoring out.

Get an early season start because as the days get longer, warmer, and less rainy, there will be more competition for good spots.

Mike, we sail around Commencement Bay, from Chinook Landing Marina in the Hylebos Waterway. Always happy to meet up with a fellow sailor, but our typical day-sail planning is similar to "the weather and winds look good today, let's take the boat out."
Let me put in a plug for the Hunter Association of Puget Sound, HAPS. We attended their annual dinner meeting in November and were so impressed with the people we met and their sailing style that we joined the group. Although we haven't yet joined any other events, they are planning now for the 2019 sailing season. The group did decide to do a South Sound tour this summer. They also have a "Meet me at..." option for scheduling impromptu meetups.
