Hi all,

History was made in NYC this week with the renaming of the Verrazano Bridge. Now called Verrazanno Bridge as it should be. Spell check is having a hard time with it since it took about 100 years.

The correct name is Verrazzano. Named after Giovanni Da Verrazzano an Italian explorer in 1524 who was the first to explore the East Coast of North America. The name is spelled with two "ZZ" not two "NN". You know what, who cares, they should have renamed it with a shorter name like "Smith".

I think he deserves to have his name spelled correctly. He was the first European to see the Hudson River (80 years before Henry Hudson). Also Cape Fear, Pamlico Sound, and Newport. He came to an unfortunate end when he was eaten four years later by the Caribs probably on Guadeloupe.

True, he made some great discoveries. Having said that he also thought the Hudson was a lake and Pamlico Sound was the start of the Pacific, so a little further refinement was needed from his successors. Not bad though for being one of the first Europeans around there.

They can spell it anyway they want. It still costs the same to cross it. I think it is $16.00 or maybe that's the Lincoln Tunnel, maybe we should change that name too, or maybe spell it differently!
Seems to be the norm now.

You do know the bridge was built in the 1960's!

:plus: for tax payer frustration. Up here in the Whites, we have two mountains in the Presidentials that bear presidents' names, but were actually named after someone else. Mount Pierce was formerly Mount Clinton, after a 19th century Governor. They could have saved tax payer $s on that one. Mount Clay is suppose to be Mount Reagan now, but I never hear anyone refer to it as such. If you hike it, there are a lot of other names you might refer to it as.

That's what happened to the Ol' Man.
He was frustrated by frivolous taxes? Maybe that was it?! Just imagine all the state letterheads that had to be reprinted after he fell. That was my first thought when I heard. But, I think we are still pretending he's up there, so we don't have to remake all those signs.

I guess people just can't get over a loss. (I am sure you know what I am referring to
While sailing to the Canaries, my father met a couple from Macedonia. They moved aboard their boat and were sailing the World. They explained that they couldn't wait to get away where everyone still resented the fact that Alexander's empire was gone and had hopes of recapturing their former glory.
