Interesting, they had a working EPIRB and didn't use it? They were caught in a storm, that wasn't there? There is always more to these stories than what is first reported. We'll see how this plays out.
I've also read that they were a day out of Tahiti and in no trouble when contacted by the CG in June, and this was well after the supposed "tropical storm" a day out of Hawaii that the weather service has no indication of.
Instead of being heralded as heroes, these two should be made examples of and should be charged for their "rescue". It's about time that sailors take responsibility for their actions and if they choose to go to sea unprepared, or in this case apparently intentionally for fame, they should be charged the cost of the resulting "rescue".
If our government feels it is unnecessary to supply critical health care for it's citizens, why should it supply rescue for those who are literally out 'playing' at sea unprepared, and get themselves into trouble?

i don't think a book on how not to sail, how not to navigate and how not to work your epirb would be a good seller. just saying....
i thought that movie was really stupid and could barely refrain from screaming at robert redford as he faked being a real sailor . fortunately the spouse restrained me so we did not get thrown out of the theatre.

This may be a little harsh. Sailing in the Hawaiian paradise is not all that easy. The channels between the islands line up nicely with the NE trade winds. Pump 20Kt winds between 2 mountainous islands and the result is unpleasant sailing.
I'm glad they are safe, I hope they have learned and I hope when the final story unfolds, there are lessons to be learned by other inexperienced sailors. We've all made stupid decisions along the way and have lived to tell about them.

Spotted by Coast Guard C-130 on May 6.
Somehow, they were spotted on a calm day in the channel between Maui and Hawaii at the same time they were in a storm... that was not recorded by anyone else in a space bounded by land on two sides! Oops... the gig is up.
