This new like thing; good or bad?

Perhaps this new "like" thing is not the best idea.
I received a PM from a newish member who hasn't been around long enough to realize that the like thing is newly instituted; "Check my percentage of likes vs yours."
This from a guy who quite possibly hasn't been boating long enough to grasp how a marine toilet operates to someone who has spent almost every day on the water (professionally and for pleasure) for the last 50 years or so.
I guess I'm just not one of the 'cool kids', huh?

Hey Capta it is just like any organization you have some good dedicated people and others that just blow you off. Don't take it personal they are probably envious about what you get to do and they don't. Best way to do it is to ignore their poor character and continue with your contributions to the forum "in their face".

I'm not tracking.... was the new member criticizing you for not having enough likes... or did he like you and you felt what you said didn't warrant a liking?

Seriously.... if a frog can have that many likes.... how serious should we take it anyway :D:rolleyes:

I'm fairly sure that the "Likes" appointment has little to do with value associated with the responses to a serious query or question. When I "Like" something on this forum it's because I'm rewarding something funny, pretty, well written (with good English and punctuation), socially and politically correct, and being something I wish I had said in writing. The answers I receive to questions are all over the place with variety in experience and knowledge basis. Ultimately I get the answer I'm looking for and that contributor gets a PM from me, thanking them for their contribution. Sometimes I choose to "Follow" these individuals. I sort of agree with Head Sail, that feedback, even if derogatory, may help with limiting the Debbie Downers, and Nay-Sayers, but perhaps instead of "Worthless", something along the line of "Not Helpful" would send the same message to the pendulum swingers? By the way Capta, I like the way you think and write!

I like the whole darned thread.
But to use the number of "likes" as an indicator of supposed superiority isn't taking into account the myriad reasons one might "like" a post.
When someone says "thanks" in response to a helpful post, that'll earn a like from me.

Someone actually took the time to calculate the PERCENTAGE of likes for two different members and compared them? Not good, and... On a Friday night? There are just too many flags to count here.
Whoever did it.. Take your right hand, extend your forefinger and thumb, and slap it against your forehead. Now snap a selfie and post it here! "L"
