Keeping things in place

First of all, apologies as I imagine this has been covered but I can't find anything in my searches. Probably I am using the wrong terminology.

So first off, what do we call the covers that close off the compartments in the cabin, compartment covers, hatch covers, what is the right term?

Secondly, how to keep them in place when the boat is heeled. I don't have cushions over them so I thought about screwing them down but that restricts access. Maybe Velcro but then they wont seal good but maybe that's good for ventilation? Maybe a clip on one end and a fastener that you turn 90 degrees on the other end but of course like every other piece of stainless I buy for the boat I'm sure they are pretty salty.
What is most commonly done when the covers are open and prone to sliding about?

Velcro is a good application for this. A few tabs should do the job. Add a 1" hole in the cover so you can use a finger to pull them off.

Maybe try a little less heel?
I like both of these ideas. The clip/cam idea could be executed in wood, not necessarily SS.

But what are they called? (I mean the covers themselves)

And does anybody fasten them?

Hi Jim, why no cushions? Cushions take care of the need to have the settee hatches locked down. If this is only a temporary situation just use a couple strips of duck tape, and clean off any residue build up with some Isopropyl Alcohol...until you get the cushions back on board.

Settee Hatches !!! HA!
No cushions because the boat was given to me and I've already spent more to refurbish whats important than the boat is worth. When I overnight, my sleeping bag on the V berth is all I need. And I use throwable PFD style cushions for sitting. (Or is it setteeing)
Also, as I remember with the Catalina 22 I had before with cushions, the cushions AND settee hatches still slid around.

There is no such thing as spending more than it is worth. It is a sailboat.....

on our boat we installed hooks that can serve to hold hats, clothes etc. next to various doors that might open in big heeling angles, a heavy sea or a knockdown. for example, the pantry closet has a 1" finger hole through which you put your finger to press a catch to open the cabinet. we have a nice piece of teak 2"long with a threaded elastic cord. the wood is suspended inside the closet door , elastic runs out through the finger hole, then a loop on the end of the elastic cord hooks onto a clothes hook .this keeps keep all of our pantry items from falling out in serious weather. we fitted our door retaining mechanisms after boats we sailed with had all their closet items fall out onto the floor in particularly nasty weather.

Jim, wow...cheap sail boating is really non-existent, but I get it! Based on what you've shared all you need is some tacky poster board putty, like the stuff kids use in their dormitories to hang posters where nails and tacks are prohibited. It leaves no residue and holds pretty well. I'm thinking that's a 3M product. Place a bead or two along the boards and fiberglass settee and 'violla no fall-off on heel. Perhaps you should consider reefing a bit if the boards are falling off the bench.

Or you could attach like a 1/2 strip of wood on the bottom side of each cover that just fits inside the hatch opening towards the inside of the boat.

About putting some hinges so the hatch would stay in place thru heel and can be flip open when need to access storage area.

Forgive me, I should have said more than I have budgeted but I suppose that's just as thoughtless.
Here's a realistic way to budget all things sailboat. Figure exactly what everything will cost. Add 50%. Double that and add another 75%. Make a mental note and throw away your list so your wife won't see it. Better yet, burn it so there's no way in hell she'll ever find it. Then forget the figure you came up with because that won't even be close anyway. Spend the money that's absolutely necessary and go sailing!

Jim,
We had the same problem with our cushions. We were constantly chasing them all over the boat when ever we sailed. Simple fix that is cheap and works great. We got a package of floor rug anti slip material like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Artistic...670678_slid_&gclid=CPCurvyow84CFZGGaQodgWgKgg

We cut pieces to go under our cushions and they have not moved since. Cindy has buried the rail numerous times in the name of testing the anti slip material ;-) and they have held firm. In fact we trailer the boat 2000 miles last month and they never moved once then either. Super easy and cheap fix.
The only issue I have with them is that when I go to get in the storage area under the cushion I have to move this material as well. I am considering gluing it the hatch lids or sewing it to the underside of the cushion. But I will probably not do either as it really isn't that big of deal.

Kermit,
I did the math and your formula is surprisingly close. Just need to double that number after you add the additional 75% and you will be right in the ball park!
