They aren't just rude to sailboats...

I was trying to teach my granddaughter to waterski yesterday. I was absolutely amazed at how many power boats seemed to make a point of passing as close in front of us as they could. And most just drove by staring. So I've determined that it's nothing personal against sailors. They're rude to *everyone.*

I'm not surprised, when my brother had a ski boat, we had to stop all time to make the ignorant others to stop following right behind our skiers and tubers, they just don't think about the what ifs... Rude yes but mostly ignorant

I had a Malibu inboard ski boat and was a ski fanatic. It got so bad that to do any skiing I would have to take a day off of work and hit the lake during the week. Weekends were insane.

As I've mentioned before, the waters around Vancouver are deadly. Any time a powerboat is in the vicinity, you MUST take the position of the give way boat AT ALL TIMES. These idiots are deadly and very frequently plow into other boats. The water around here are huge but not big enough for these idiots and their 500+ HP kamakazi boats.

You buy a car, get a license (pass a simple but fundamental test first) then you get to drive the car. You buy a boat...you get to go out on the water and drive it and there is no requirement beyond buying the boat to drive it. No license, no training, no nothing. The same rules that apply while walking at the mall apply to the water even if it is a deadly difference. For my part I have taken the USSA course as far as coastal cruising which covers the colregs, navigation and rules of the road. Also got my 6 pack license from the USCG. No big deal really but I know the rules of the road (water) while others seems to feel a "no-wake" area is anything under a full blown tsumami. Arrrgh!

I'll tell another short story, me and a buddy was in a no wake cove fishing along the bank in a 12 Jon boat and we here a jet ski coming but can't see it til he rounded the corner and once he seen us he was on a dead run right at us, I thought wtf is this guy doing, mind you he was running 40-50 mph and in the last 30' he spins and drowns us in the roost we almost exploded in anger, straight to the dock we went and went around to the ramps, found no trailers for jet skis, thankfully because we would still be in jail today!

Operator licensing has made no difference in NJ. You cannot regulate stupidity, ignorance or rudeness. Just gets more government fund raising. Don't expect it to keep you safe.
