suggestion for getting reply for "radio check"

As mentioned earlier, VHF channel 16A is monitored by the CG and is reserved for emergency calls only. Around our PNW waters the CG uses channel 22A for working purposes. If I need to make a non-emergency call to the CG, I use 22A, which could also be used for a radio check. The CG crew have always been very gracious and helpful.

When no reply on Ch 9, I have requested a check on Ch 16, BUT asked for the reply to come back on 9 or 68. That way I'm off Ch 16. Just my 2 cents.

Doesn't change the fact that VHF Channel 16 is for hailing and distress. If you're not hailing someone or calling in distress, then you could be accused of improper use of the channel. If you just happened via bad timing to step on someone relaying critical information to the CG--could get into real trouble. Moreover, you might not even know the channel is being used at that time.

Here in SW Florida 16 is constantly being used for radio checks even though there is an automated system on 27. CG does not seem to mind. At least they seldom respond advising that 16 is for hailing only. They will jump on vessels giving fishing reports and restaurant reservations. Channel 9 is used for hailing bridges. Very annoying.

AMEN!!! VHF 16 should NOT be used for radio checks regardless of your situation....

I suspect if more folks would actually abide by the law, and they actually monitored VHF 16, as they are legally required to do (if you have a VHF), then we'd not have so much rude and inconsiderate use of VHF 16.

It get so bad on nice days, that I don't even sail with the radio on any more.

A near by lightening strike took out all my electronics in 2005. No visible damage. I went aboard turned on the VHF and heard another boater on the harbor. I keyed the mic but didn't hear the usual click. Finally I looked at the top of the mast and the antenna was gone. The radio was receiving just fine. Sorry, just because it can receive doesn't mean it can transmit.

If only they'd make dealers include "How to Use Your VHF Radio" on all old & new boats they sell.

Not that those dopes would read it...

"Hey, Bubba, didya hear that Gonzo got arrested for misusing his VHF?"

In the apostles we have land-based yahoos using handheld marine VHF radios to coordinate ATV mounted bear hunts at the local landfill.

Seems it's the cheepest way to go.

In Canada the coast guard is not pleased to offer a radio check back on Channel 16 but more than happy to oblige on 83A.

We just go on channel 16 and yell "mayday, mayday, this is the...(insert most recent powerboat to throw us a wake here)". Always gets a rapid response.

If you can't get a reply on channel 9 then tune to the 70s for some fishermen talking. Try it there. On the Bay you can almost never get a check on 9 but the fishermen are happy to check their radios. Be sure to give your location so they will give you yours.

Another fantastic sailing weekend!
I decided to test my 25W at a range of ≈90 miles on Ch 27 FM using Sea Tow Auto Radio check located near Mobile, Alabama.
Their automated system worked perfectly, and the BONUS was it replayed my transmission!:waycool:
I was reminded to hold the mic input out of the wind.:rolleyes:

It did confirm the distance plus clarity of my 100 mi range.:biggrin:

PS: @woodster next time you plan a sail on a weekend, we might trying a FM link up, for grins. Until you improve your shower scheduling, I think I will keep it to about 90 miles.:)

Same here in Mqt.
Recently downstate, I was hailing marinas on 16, but the local dockside experts informed me that 16 was only to be used as an emergency channel....plz hail on 9. Sigh.......
