To Do Lists.....

I was mentioning in a different post that I have a To Do list.. though, like most things, it's cluttered with a bunch of other junk in my head.... So, I've decided this morning that I will put together a real To Do List... probably in Excel. Though if I decide to put in the cost of each project, I'll have to password protect it from the admiral...or come up with a formula that would take what looks like $12.98 and adjust it to $1,873.33.

I was wondering if you keep your To Do list in some sort of written form or only in your head... If it's in a written form would you care to share it?

I have a Word doc that is my ToDo list and I also have a spreadsheet of what I need to buy for individual projects. I put the cost and a link to the vendor as well. I mark the tab green when I have done that project. Yes the total can get a bit scary sometimes and here is a bit of advice on that. Never.....EVER.... total up all the costs for all your projects whether complete or not..... that number is the really scary one.

I have a maintenance log onboard. It's a binder and I make entries in ink. I note everything I've done to the boat, and have a section for to-do's.

Annually, I bring the notebook home and enter everything into my Mac Pro not only as a backup, but primarily so my maintenance log is searchable. I use a yellow highlighter to mark the entries I've entered into the Mac, so I don't re-enter them the next time.

If I'm at home, and I think of a to-do for the boat, I enter it into the Mac.

I find that if I keep it in my head, not only do things tend to not get done, but I get a sense of the maintenance items getting out of control. Having a reliable list puts it into perspective and keeps me at relative ease.

I, too, use to make a mental note of things to do. HA! That only works for about an hour. I found it best to keep a 3 x 5 card in my pocket to write things down as soon as I thought about them. What to do, what to buy, etc.. I find I get alot more done this way, and I have a shopping list when I go to a store.

I agree with Ron. I use 3x5 index cards. But what I do WHEN I'M DONE with any work is to enter it into the log on the boat and ALSO add it to my "Inventory" spreadsheet with item, date, source, cost, model number, and remarks. I hate asking myself: "Geez, what was that item I installed last year, how much did it cost and where'd I get it from?" It also helps answer questions on forums about products and sources and prices. I also use the spreadsheet to calculate how much I spend each year for tax purposes.

In addition to the Maintenance Log I have aboard (guess that's more a "Done" than a "Todo" - I do mention things that HAVE to be done in the regular Log), I have a text file that has:
- detailed information about the boat, such as make, model, year, license number, etc.
- contact information for various marinas, parts dealers, mechanics...
- Three categories of "Todo": MUST do, SHOULD do, and COULD do. For instance, fixing the transmission is a MUST Do, replacing the engine is a SHOULD do, and converting the icebox to a fridge (replacing the portable fridge) is a COULD Do.
- details on any major project (such as engine replacement)

I've found a text file is the most versatile, and I can move it to any computer over the years, print it out, etc. without any worries about compatibility. It's also fun to look at the Todo files I kept for previous boats.

How long you been married? Your wife already makes adjustments on all your estimates. Cost x 3. Time x 4. Frustration x 3. Trips to the Band-Aid box = (ACTUAL FRUSTRATION / ESTIMATED FRUSTRATION) X (TIME/WEEKS TO LAUNCH).

I use a Google Doc spreadsheet as a logbook. In it I can keep records of supplies needed and expended, and I keep separate tabs for things like measurements taken, and todo lists for events like winterizing and commissioning. Because it's in Google Docs I can edit it with my phone while I'm at the boat before I forget anything.

Just remember that anything you have completed on your TODO list just goes to the bottom of the list. It usually needs doing again when it hits the top of the list. Or so I've been told. My list hasn't repeated yet as I'm still working through the first pass.

It's going to take me so long to get through every project on my 35 year old boat that by the time I get it all fixed, it will start leaking again.

I use Evernote for saving all kinds of thoughts and resource material related to whatever I need to remember for a project. I have several to-do lists in there, along with all kinds of other stuff. A spreadsheet would be helpful if you are trying to calculate costs as you go.

I occasionally put notes ony reminders app on my iPhone. If it's really important I put it on my iPhone calendar with reminders. If it's critical I make it a Rolling Event so the calendar will bug me multiple times a day until I decide it's too much trouble so I delete the event.

You know the formula already.

Boating Price = Actual Price + $500 ( for Actual price greater than $50 )
Boating Price = Actual Price + $50 ( for Actual price less than $50 )

Just put in the Actual Price

and if the Projects Total is bigger that the Admiral Limit

Subtract the ADMIRAL BRIBERY GIFT from Grand Total.

We have a log for the boat, but for a to do list; I use a calendar that's accessible from my phone or computer, I also share it with my wife's phone, computer, and tablet. In our case we use Google calendar. We also chose to share it with our kids so they know what we are up to. It also emails me reminders.

I use an app named Priorities on my iPhone and iPad. It creates todo lists with subitems and notes. The lists can be shared among users and updated by all users. I keep todo lists for yearly boat launch, yearly boat recovery, maintenance / upgrade projects, items for daily boat use. It works well. Items can be checked off, and then the check marks can be reset to reuse the list.

Make a written list of everything to be done, separate it into three equal pages, complete everything on the first page, throw away the other two pages and GO SAILING

There is a written list on the boat and when I need it I can't find it nor the pen !
I do keep a list on my iPad which seems to work better. I can transfer it to my phone so I can look at it after I leave the boating store which helps me to remember what I forgot to buy.
The admiral probably doesn't really care what I spend on the boat. She probably has more money tied up in shoes and purses. After 47 years it's a non-issue.

I keep various to-do lists in the "Notes" app on my iPhone. It sync's through the "Cloud" with my laptop computer at home. I really like that because I can do any major updates or modifications on the laptop, which is much easier than thumb-typing on the iPhone. But I still have the ability to edit the Notes when I'm out on the boat or at the store.
