I had to smile today when skimming my new Sail mag. Ads for $500K to $3.5MM boats.... and an article explaining how to use a VHF radio! Of course, everyone has to start somewhere, but it sure makes you wonder what the metrics are in the readership...

Apparently the boat manufactures are targeting the wealthy people who know nothing about boating.. possibly the rewards are higher?.

sail magazine is an avenue to connect the two together... the average person that already has a boat has little use for that particular publication.
A real sailor has even less use for it...

I just don't think you're keeping up to date with where boating is headed these days :naughty:.

I saw some time ago there's a boatyard in Florida that will build large size boats (undoubtedly power) without engines or navigation equipment. The function of these barges is to permanently sit at the dock and you, with martini in hand, brag about your previous nautical adventures. I can imagine the more adventurous owners will have them towed to various marinas throughout the summer.

Laugh as you may, but there is no record of any of these buffoons ever having run aground :snooty:.

As long as they stay at the dock I'll swear on their behalf that I was with them on the stormy crossing in '78, or '87... whatever keeps them at the dock.

I got Sailing today. I gave up on all others for lack of pertinent articles. Including Good Old Boat and Practical Sailor. I tried Small Craft Advisor but my H260 is huge compared to what they discuss. This forum fits what I want pretty well. But what I want is something in print that I can read, set on the nightstand, turn out the light and go to sleep. Any would-be-publishers wanna start a new magazine?

How about Cruising Outpost (new version of Lats and Atts). About as real as it gets

I wish I could. It seems to me that reading as a media is going away while video is now the communicative media that thrives. The Admiral beats me with the pillow when I keep her up watching videos of carburetor rebuilding. If I could just read about it, my head would feel so much better in the morning.

Thanks for the tip! I book marked the site and will probably give it a year's worth. Thanks again.

One of the unthinking moderators on this board removed a post I made last week about just this issue.:eek::eek:

People buying 38+ foot boats and not knowing how to use a VHF and other basic things. Too bad, 'cuz I'd posted it without typing into a word processor first. Wish that moderator had a thicker skin. I opined that many of us grew, literally, in boat sizes and didn't have the Titanic as our first boats and didn't ask stupid "How Do I Use My Battery Switch" questions.

Ach, too bad it got lost to posterity.

Beats gettin' banned, though. :doh::dance::dance::dance::D:D:D

Sail ... They barely even bother to sail the boats ...

Ever see a BAD sailboat review in Sail?? :)
most of the time they raise sails in something like 4 knots of breeze and lament that the sailing wasn't more stimulating, and then they'll talk about how smartly the boat would perform had they been given the opportunity. Then they go on to describe how the boat will circle within a boat length under engine power and what a pleasure she is to dock.

It makes me think that if they really wanted to review the sailing characteristics, they would make sure that they sailed the boat under a variety of conditions. Instead, I get the feeling that they allocate all of about 15 minutes for actually raising sails, and they don't really want to actually sail the boat in any kind of condition that might possibly risk seasickness.

For a while the airline I work for was hiring 500 hr pilots, usually rich kids, that could no more fly an airplane than take out the garbage. Just no experience. They missed out on true aviation as far as I'm concerned.
Same for these people who buy the Titanic for their first boat . They are simply missing out on so much real sailing.

I still have a subscription, but that's because I got in on a $12/yr subscription deal (or was it $18?). Anyway, when they reviewed 36' boats as 'daysailors', I began to worry about their touch with reality...

I still find their 'Sailor's Sketchbook' informative, if not applying to my current situation.

Several times now, I have considered letting my subscription to Sail lapse. Then they send me some 24 month deal for $11 or whatever. Next time it lapses, I'm gonna let it lay dead, no matter how cheap they try to make it. The reason? It just makes me angry their editorial slant. I'm never going to be able to afford such expensive new boats. I'm happy just getting Good Old Boat and Small Craft Advior: That's all I can afford, old boats and small boats. I do like the large format Sailing magazine, because they tend to have lovely pictures of classic boats from time to time, and Bob Perry's design thoughts, but it's much more expensive and still not worth it for me. I have been led to believe that over in England, Yachts and Yachting mag has had an increased focus on smaller boats, but I haven't seen fit to gamble on a subscription yet, even though I can get it in the Newsstand app on my iPad.

I just let my Sail subscription lapse. Not relevant to the way I use my boat now, and I'm realistic enough to know that I'll never own anything much bigger. I may just have to drag out the wood working tools and find a new focus. Like an old Chris Craft.

But I like the big pictures of the pretty boats when there snow on the ground. Works as well as my Prozac.
