I was looking at my info. packet that came with the boat in 1977. Oday made a system to raise the mast using the boom. I cannot read all the info since the copy is not real clear especially the diagrams. There is some kind of metal triangular piece that may attach to the chain plate? My boys are off in the service to our nation, so I will have to raise it with little help this year. Anybody have info on this system?

I have a slightly cleaned-up copy, I'll post clean copies of the diagrams on the sheet. I'll also add a few pics that I've captured on-line.

Those triangle plates attach to short sections of cable between the chainplates and the shortened upper shrouds. It was a Factory-installed option, although you could retro-fit the setup if no longer installed.

Ok, that makes sense now. Thanks for taking the time to post it for me. D and R marine has a kit now for the necessary parts.

How many people here use this mast raising set up? I just bought a 1985 26' and new to sailing and have most everything figured out in the boat except how to safely raise the mast with 2 people.

Since we pull our 23-2 with a truck camper we have to raise the mast from the rear of the boat going forward. We built a gen pole that attaches to the mast base plate (our base plate may be different than yours after 37 years) and attach the main sheet at the bow. All the factory system is doing is getting the pivot points of the gen pole (boom in their case) the same as the pivot point at the mast step so the lines that hold the gen pole and mast (in our case) remain at the same tension level. There are lots of ideas on the web. Ours is a one person operation. The blue lines in the picture (we call it the spider web) are attached to the gen pole and the mast to keep both centered. The ring is at the mast step pivot point. No comments about my butt. I'll post a video of raising the mast later.

I'm using the trailer winch in the photos but I usually take it up and down when the boat is in the water at the dock. When it's off the trailer I use a 2 to 3 part hookup from the a-frame to the bow then back to a primary winch. It can be a one man operation but I wouldn't recommend it.

That looks sweet. How do you keep the mast from shifting port and starboard while stepping or because you have an A frame system it doesn;t shift side to side?

The a-frame helps to keep it centered but it's nice to have someone steady it as it goes up or down especially if there is any wind. Post or message me if you want any more info.

So you hook up the back stay and hook your forestay to the top connection of the two pipes where they join correct? I have a roller furling so I guess I could use that. And you don't use your main haylard at all do you for any help in stepping do you?

No, I use the jib halyard and hook that to the a-frame. If you've got external halyards you could us the main halyard.

I am curious about the metal poles. Are they EMT, and what diameter? How are they hooked to pivot on the 2X4's, and how are they hooked to each other at the point of the V? If you have already explained all this elsewhere, just post a link if that is easier.

Thanks.

1" EMT flattened on the upper end and a hole drilled thru. Held together with a galvanized clevis. An assortment of clevises really comes in handy for attaching the lines and blocks. The lower end of the a-frame slides over an eye-bolt that is loosely attached to the 2x4 with a thru bolt with a washer on the head. Look closely in pic.

Rbone, I copied your device, except for using the trailer winch I attached my main sheet block and tackle to the bow end of the emt and the chain plate hole for the foresail, my boat has three different holes in the stainless weldment. It worked AWESOME! WAY easier and faster than using the diy mast crane at the marina. Thanks again.

So....I believe the 26' is set up for a keel step instead of a deck step. Am I right and if so, does it really matter which way you step it? Deck step would be so much easier I think.

If it is keel stepped, you will have to lift the whole mast vertical, and then drop it down through the deck hole. A totally different scenario. You will probably need a crane.

There is no hole to drop it in. Just the tabernacle on the deck with 2 pins. Of course 1 pin in and then step and then 2'nd pin in.

Okay, so it is not keel stepped but deck stepped. Look at rbone's pictures and make what he did. I did it by his pictures and I spent 20 bucks or so. 2 hours to get the parts and build it. It worked better than I expected.

Yup, that what I plan on doing for sure. I guess I was wrong to think it wasn't deck stepped.

Just realized you are only an hour and a half from me in MI.
