Looks like a facemask tied on a string, or half a bra. Has your wife seen it?

great caption contest fodder, but looks like a sea anchor, er drogue, errrr what's the difference anyway...something to toss over the stern in heavy seas.

Ha ha, I will ask her :)

I also thought it could be a sea anchor but this looks too small to be one. It's only a little over a foot long and less than that in diameter. The bottom end is open too, like a funnel

A wind sock/ weather gauge.

You hang it on the end of your boom to tell the weather.

If it is hanging straight down it is calm.
If it is ting horizontal to the deck it is windy.
If it is wet it is raining.
If it is covered with white powdery ice it is snowing.

I recall seeing something like that once. It was some kind of water filtering system. I think they put salt water in it and somehow clean water dripped out and the salt stayed trapped. I don't recall if there was any other thing that you had to do or not. Is there some type of filtering mesh at the bottom tip?

It is a safety parachute for when going up the mast. That thin line would not hold a sea anchor. How about a hoist to get bolts and nuts and tools when already up the mast.

What is this

It's a drogue. Probably from something like a Switlik man overboard module. My Switlik MOM 8A unit has a small drogue just like that to prevent the inflatable pylon and horse shoe from flying/drifting away from the location where it was deployed.

May be a funnel to catch rain water. Add a tube of applicable size to the bottom to feed the water into the deck fitting.

Its a basket for passing on stuff from cabin to cockpit. Well at least that's what it looks like to me. I remember when I was young, we lived in apartment blocks, street hawkers would canvas at ground floors hawking their wears, food stuff etc... My mom would lower this basket with money, the hawker would put the items in basket we haul it up. No need to go downstairs. ;)

My guess would be the sea anchor used for drift fishing. The wind would keep you pointed if you drop it from the bow. At that size it would seem a small skiff would work well.

could be a fruit basket or a coconut bag if you don't want to use it for other purposes or maybe even a work basket for when you are up top in the chair

I'm wondering if the previous owner may have been attempting to dampen the rolling of the boat while at anchor. I've seen shoots and buckets designed to be tied to the end of the boom or a gin pole and then you tie off the boom hard over the side. The shoot (or bucket) would be in the water and dampen the roll of the boat as swells roll under the boat.

Depending on design of bottom, it could be a water bucket. Drop it overboard, it will go down fairly straight. Once filled pull straight up and the bottom should close, keeping water inside.

It's like the old "Popeils Pocket Fishman", it does everything.

It's a drogue (#1)
it's a bucket
it's a filter
it's a weather gauge via Garbon, with all the directions for use.
it's a tool bucket for mast climbing
it's an ugly one-boob or half bra
it's a hamper while cruising
it's a white thing while not cruising
It's a bird, no it's a plane no, it's..............................!

It looks like a sea anchor for old lifeboats. I remember these from my early sailing days.
