If you have a Valid Passport, they will simply stamp a Mexico Visa in it.

No passport , you must have other valid ID. They used to have a paper application or their Visa to use for short term visits.

Jim...

PS: I lived in Mexico for 4 years on their Resident Visa.

Is it possible that they are considering you as "living" in Mexico since you own a boat big enough to live on and thus are under some other rules as @JamesG161 alludes to since he had a "resident visa" to live there? Just speculating.

In Sonora, your visa will either be a free 7 day one, or a $35-40 six month one.
There will be a bit of paperwork you'll carry around with your passport, and surrender when you check out of the country.
