I posted this on another forum so I hope I'm not being redundant.

My Yanmar 3GMF has developed a oil leak. I believe it is coming from the idle adjustment bracket. I've ordered a new bracket (actually two parts) with seal but I'm not sure how much expertise is needed to replace the old one. If it is just a matter of removing the old and screwing on the new I can handle that. My concern is that there is some internal parts attached to the bracket that need to be taken into account when fixing the problem.

Can anyone with real knowledge of this engine (circa 1983) advise me?

Thanks,
Joe Mullee

Hi Joe,

Can't help you yet, but mine is starting to drip too. My first attack was to go around and tighten the front case bolts a little. I don't think that did it, but really haven't run the engine much. We are planning on a week long trip at the end of the month. I will be watching it carefully with a mirror to try and figure it out. I'll be interested in your experience.

Internal parts? Try finding your engine on www.marinedieseldirect.com and finding the blow up diagrams of that part and the engine block. Those drawings will explain what's behind door #1. :)

Joe, On your other post, Claude Auger posted a drawing of the governor shafting and the seals. I have not opened any of that up, since mine is not leaking.. If it is engine oil, the leak should not get worse since there is nothing but oil splash inside the case in that area.. Claude's post is from the Yanmar factory shop manual. None of this stuff is easy to work with since much of it controls the governor and the governor may have to be re-calibrated after the repair work. Again, good luck ..

Waiting To Leave

This all happened pretty recently. I had my boat on the hard for a few weeks to do the bottom and some other things in April/May. When she went back in is when this leak started. I'm leaving on a 2-3 week trip this month so I decided to get it repaired before I leave. The new idle adjustment bracket and the gear case slide cover have been ordered and I've asked the local Yanmar guy to do the work. Hopefully I'll be good to go sometime this week.

Claude, it's the diagrams that convinced me to get a mechanic to do this rather than tackle it myself. I appreciate the help from everyone.

Thanks,
Joe Mullee

Warren, I'm going to the north shore of Long Island/CT via the C&D, Delaware, Jersey coast, NYC route. I'm solo to Cape May where hopefully my NJ brother-in-law will be able to crew up the coast. I have help for the return portion in the first few days of July. The engine issue is a problem. If I have to, due to time constraints caused by my engine issues, I'll change plans and head down the Chesapeake & back for a shorter trip. If you have any interest give me a call.
