My boat sat in some shallow water and rocked a bit. It wore the rubber like coating off of both sides of the wing keel in about a six inch stretch.
Is it impetrative that I have this sealed?
Can I do it myself and what would I use?
It's heavier than epoxy paint and almost feels like rubber.

Hi Tom,
Without seeing your keel I will take a guess at what your seeing. The keel is lead, covered with fiberglass. What I think you could be seeing is VC Tar2, that is the only rubber like substance I can think of that might be on it.

There is no reason you cannot make the repair yourself. If you know who put the bottom paint on that is where I would start try to see if you can what they used. It could also be a thick coat of Interprotect 200E or 3000/3001 a bit of research should confirm what was used.

Do you know what bottom paint is on the keel now? That alone might help in discovering what was used.

Can you shoot a couple pictures?
