Winch handle

If anyone needs a nice aluminum winch handle it can be found about 1/2 mile from the sail boat docks on Rocky Fork lake in Ohio........ ON THE BOTTOM!!!. I was thrashing about solo in 15-20 knots with full sail up. Decided to reef and was tightening the main halyard back up by pulling on it with a couple wraps around the winch. I'd left the handle in the winch and as it spun I managed to foul it some how and knock it out of it's socket. I lunged for it as it bounced over the rail; missing it only by a few inches. Finally I know where the saying"curse like a sailor" comes from. ( LORD forgive me ) Anyone here tried the floating handles?

Buying a floating handle...

...insures that you will never drop it inthe water again! My first trip out on my brand new H260 I lost the pin while trying to connect the main sheet and then dropped the winch handle.

Floating handle

I bought one as a backup 14 seasons ago (on another boat) and, fortunately, have never had to use it (knock wood);) . It still sits below in a cabinet.

2 X Floating

I always use the floating type and always carry a spare left in the area under the bottom step alongside the water balast wind nut!

Happened here, also.

Mine popped out of the winch, slid down the starboard seat ever so slowly, bounced just right in the outboard well so that it toppled into the lake. I've relaced it with a locking, floating winch handle. I leave it locked on the winch.

The sea is fed every season

Sometimes I feel really clumsy and you all give me comfort - I'm not alone out there. Now I've stopped trying to save the things that just slide over board, because once it made me put my big foot on top of the GPS, trying to save an old coushion. And another time I lost my eyeglasses trying to save a coffemug. Keeping all the valuables inside, tie a string between my arm and the favourite wrench aso. And when something slides or bounces away, I have to accept the fact. toomas
