Whole rig too tight ?

This is really good timing, I just posted on the Hunter site last week. I bought a 30 foot sloop in Ohio last Fall and transported it to Michigan. When the marina stepped the mast, it would not reach all the attachment points. They had the headstay (roller furler) attached too far back and too low, and they attached the forked backstay to the aluminum toe rail. They tried to fix it but it just would not reach. So I got a friend and some block and tackle, a few safety lines and we had to add large shackle rings to the backstay ( 2 inches on each side) and we got it to work and it tuned ok (I used the Brian Toss tuning video). Why would this rig change so drastically, or could it have been under a huge stress load in Ohio?

Sounds like ...

...you have the headstay turnbuckle turned most of the way in. When tuning your rig, the first thing you need to do is set the mast rake. The rake on your boat should be about 10". If you set it too far forward, the backstay will have a very hard time getting attached. On a no wind day, hang a weight from the main halyard so it hangs just above the boom. Measure back from the back of the mast about 10" along the boom. That is where the weight should be hanging. Adjust the headstay to this setting. After the rake is done you can move on the rest of the tuning.

Yup

Hello, Almost certainly the problem, assuming the shrouds are in the neighborhood. Depending on the furler, it could be easy or otherwise to adjust the turnbuckle, so find a manual and/or a factory rep to help you with the process. Amazing what so-called riggers will do, neh? Oh, and there's no guarantee that the rake was right before, so don't rule out rig length changes. Fair leads, Brion Toss

Which Hunter 30?

I am also blessed with a Hunter 30... a 1979 Cherubini Boat... would this tip on rake apply to all Hunter 30's or just the new ones... I have a heck of a time trying to tune up my good old boat!

Rig tuning procedure

Here is the rig tuning procedure for our '77 h27. It will work for your h30, except that the 10" rake at the boom sounds about right for your mast. Also, the tensions are set around 10% to 15% of the breaking strength of your stays. The 3/16's stainless stays on our h27 have a breaking strength of 5,000 pounds. The other criteria is that there can be no slack in the leeward sails when heeled 20 degrees or more in a strong wind. Good luck, David Lady Lillie
