removehtml]I'm having trouble finding a source for the drive belt for my ST4000 autopilot. I cam across one Web site that said Ratheon doesn't make ther drive belt for the MK-I (black ring) wheel drive units anymore so you have to spend $500 upgrading to the MK-II (grey ring) unit. Anybody know where to buy the drive belts for the older style wheel drive?Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

I got mine...

at WM a few years ago. I bought 2 so I would have a spare. Hint: Try eBay! But mine are for an AH3000. I thought the 4000 was a gear-driven unit?

I checked eBay...

...and only found a control unit for the AH3000. It was in England and you may be able to email him to find out if he has your size. Size does make a difference. They come in differeent lengths.

Mickey , if you can define the belt by type and size

chances are very good that McMaster-Carr sells them. They have about a gazillion drive belt styles, sizes and shapes. Raytheon probably never did make the belts. Most likely used a standard stock belt.

Endless belts refer to closed loops. Open-ended belting are lengths of belt that may be connected. Adjustable-length belting may be assembled to variety of lengths. Endless Belts | Open-Ended Belting Timing Belt Series A timing belt series is an industry standard designation that includes belts for a given set of width, pitches, and tooth style. AT10 Series | B Series | G Series | H Series | HPPD Series | HTD Series | L Series | MXL Series | Poly Chain GT Series | Power Grip GT Series | W Series | XL Series | Y Series Belt Construction Single-Sided with Trapezoidal Teeth: Trapezoidal tooth design eliminates the slippage associated with V-belts, and the noise and lubrication problems of metal roller chain. Single-Sided with Curved Teeth: The curved tooth profile results in more surface area contact between these belts and pulleys, providing higher torque capacity, a stronger grip, and quieter operation. Interchangeable with HTD (high torque drive), Power Grip GT, and HPPD (high performance power drive) synchronous drive belts and pulleys. Double-Sided with Trapezoidal Teeth: Double-sided for simulateous use on two or more shafts. Trapezoidal teeth mate with grooves in timing belt pulleys for a positive grip. Either side can transmit a full load; serpentine them to transfer full power on both sides. Single-Sided with Tire Track Teeth: Here's an extremely quiet belt and pulley system for your high-torque, high-precision operations. The unique tire-track tooth profile of the belts (also known as the eagle design) results in optimum surface area contact with the pulley for ver low noise and superb grip. The tire-track design also makes the belts self-tracking, so there's no need for flanges on the pulleys--this gives you a drive that takes up less space, weighs less, and puts less load on your bearings. Double-Sided Flexi-Timing: The special tooth-design of these flexible synchronizing belts allows slight to significant misalignment between multiple pulleys in a drive. Belts are double-sided, so they can be serpentined. Material Rubber The industry standard for belt materials. Durable, flexible, and is able to absorb heat that is produced as the belt moves through the pulley. Silicone Rubber Stand up to high temperatures, corrosion, and chemical contact. Molded Polyurethane Offers resistance to tearing and abrasion, as well as good resistance to oils, water, and chemicals. Urethane Will not mark surfaces the way that other materials do. Run more quietly than comparable rubber belts, while providing the same durability and flexibility. High resistance to abrasion, oil, and chemicals. Designed for light-duty power transmission applications. Belt Width 1/8" | 3/16" | .20" | .22" | 1/4" | 5/16" | 3/8" | 1/2" | 3/4" | 1" | 1-1/2" | 2" | 12 mm | 15 mm | 16 mm | 20 mm | 21 mm | 25 mm | 30 mm | 32 mm | 35 mm | 36 mm | 37 mm | 40 mm | 50 mm | 52.5 mm | 55 mm Pitch The pitch of a timing belt is the distance between the center of the crown of one tooth and the center of the crown of the tooth next to it. .08" | .157" | .2" | .375" | .5" | 5 mm | 8 mm | 10 mm | 14 mm Color Black | Off-White | Translucent Yellow http://www.mcmaster.com/ I added a link but this page gives a small picture of what is available.

pain in the autohelm

Mickey: I just went thru the pain of trying to locate the very same belt for mine and nowhere is it to be found.... except (supposedly) thru Raytheon (add $). Now you can't order from them directly, so you need to go to a distributor like West Marine ( add more $)as I did with the serial # of the unit. Phone calls ensued then a confirmation that the belt is available ....... for the low price of $50.00 (for a belt that could not have cost more than $5 to mass produce). So, here I sit waiting almost 4 weeks and the belt has still not arrived. Stay tuned! PS: I made an executive decision not to seek a generic belt because of time constraints. I try to look for alternate sources for parts other than West Marine etc because the mark up is unbelieveable.

When I order from McMaster-Carr on Monday the order arrives on Wednesday. When you receive the new belt look for a number on the outside of it. That number probably corresponds with a makers number.

Try Motion Industries.

I doubt that Raymarine ever had a "custom" belt made. If you have the old one I would try Motion Industries (find them on the internet). They have an entire section on belts. They also have several locations around the country so you may be able to visit their locations and match your belt to theirs.

how about posting the info on your belt

If you'll post the info on the belt when you get it I'll try to chase down a generic version and post that info. I've delt with McMaster Carr and have been very satisfied with their service.

Mickey, that would be great. We really need to find a source for these belts. It's just a matter of time until every original wears out. Thanks....

I don't Think They Were Sold With the Units...

...because you could only tell at the installation what length belt was needed. Then you bought the one you needed. Each installation may require a different length belt. That is why there are so many different lengths of belts based upon the location of the drive unit and the belt wheel. If you still have the old one (assuming all it did was part), then take the number off of the outside, flat surface of the belt when ordering. GOOD LUCK FINDING IT!
