The hull id on my 72 R-29 is located on the outside of the transom in the upper starboard corner.

Hull numbers prior to 11/72

Hull numbering was not required by USCG until Nov. '72 so earlier hulls, it seems, were only marked with paint or felt-tip before liners and decks were joined. You might find it in an exposed hull area say in a locker, or it may have got painted over, or covered somehow.
