Hunter 40 Saint John
I race with a Hunter 40, right now I have a 140% genoa and have been racing and cruising it for 15 years. Time to replace sail, but I can't decide on what size sail to go with. Our river system can go from 0 -25 true in a heart beat, but mostly around 5-15..... When heading upwind I am looking for a sail that can get me at about 20 Deg App, our 140% can run at about 30-40 quite well... Any suggestions....

In general.... it depends on what is more important to you.

In racing, you set your sailplan for the light airs, and actively deal with the excess pressure in the puffs. Cruising is the opposite. Set for expected biggest air, and be OK being slightly under-powered most of the time. That's OK when cruising, but will KILL you racing.

You gotta pick, you really can't have both.

Well sized and designed, genoa size should not effect your pointing ability. The AWA will get lower as the breeze come up, that's true on any boat. Focus more on boatspeed. The angle will sort itself out.

I had my sailmaker build 2 genoas: a 150 % racing Genoa and a 105% blade. The blade is for heavy air and cruising.

I have checked it out, There wasn't any real answers, or maybe that's the idea, its all personal choice. Still looking for someone who actually tried several different options on said boat.. We'll see if anybody gets back
Yes, the answerr is: Your boat, your choice. :) Jack's analysis is right on, as always!!!;););)

The stuff in red is a completely different question than this thread started with. Hope you find someone who sails right where you do...
