So I'm sitting here designing the lettering for a friends freshly christened and newly named boat and got to thinking why people name their boats what they do. Our boat's name is Olo2 which means there was an Olo previous. Our 6 year old named her, my wife and I had a list of names but nothing worth bragging about so we asked Harrison what he wanted to name her... "Olo o'course" was his reply as if there was any question about it. We then asked him what we should call the dinghy..."Antsy o'course". We have no idea where Olo came from but we feel Antsy was a stroke of genius, (if you're getting antsy sitting on the boat, jump in the dinghy and head to the beach/town/neighbor's boat, etc.) Not bad for a 6 year old.
So, how did you come up with your name?

My wife and I have somewhat stressful jobs. We both are looking forward to some place to hide and relax. Thus, Respite.

Danny-
Interesting question. The only boats I have named were the first two I owned. The first was a 1981 Seidelmann 24.1. I changed the name from Breakin' to Too Feisty but no one got it. So then I changed it to Summer Wind because of the song by Frank Sinatra which is one of my favorites. The next boat was a Capri 22 that had no name when I got it so I named it Social Hazard (because that is what I am). The next boat was a Hunter 34 with the name Jolly Swagman. I kept it because the Jolly Swagman is an Aussie character referred to in the song Waltzing Matilda and it also means someone who travels or is a bit of a hobo. Emmanuel was the name given to my current Hunter 40.5 by the PO. He named her that because he lived on Immanuel street and also because it means (in either spelling) "God With Us". I like to tell people she is named after the 70's porn star. If I was going to change her name now it would be to either Thunder Princess, Peripatetic Princess or you guessed it-Princess of the Lake.

I love the name of your dingy-Antsy. Did you have a good time at your birthday party Saturday? Sorry I didn't make it up there. I was tired and got sidetracked. When are you going up again?

Great name with a great story behind it! Boat names with great stories are very intriguing to me.

Out previous boat "Victim of Fate" came from "A Pirate Looks at Forty" because the song described me very well at the time. Out current boat "Anam Cara" (literally Irish Gaelic for "Soul Friend (Soul Mate)) got her name from our wedding bands. The Admiral was complaining that I never named a boat after her so I went with that. It's previous name was "Topp Heavy" after the PO's wife...so it needed to be changed!! There are some great names out there!

Although we informally nicknamed our 11ft snark the 'snarkasaurous', our first "real" boat's name was given to us by a friend who continually ragged on us to get a real one(he had a beautiful Victoria 18). When I finally showed up at the lake with a pretty tired O'day 17 and asked for rigging advice his response was it's "About Time" hence, the name.
My V21 was after listening to 'stinkpotter' friends complain about fuel costs at the marina. My answer was usually "Wind is Free"

Well I haven't changed the name of mine yet but I think I might have a new name. The current name "Family Tradition" just don't fit me. So thought about "Ebisu" Japanese god of luck and fisherman. And then had a dinner party wit friends known since Junior High. We used to hike camp ski and lots of other out door stuff. I was always kinda clumsy trip a lot but never fall. Well they started calling it Haw syndrome ("Haw" being my last name). Well some how that was brought up and then it flashed "Syndrome" good name for the boat!!

Great stories so far...I have another that I almost forgot about. My first boat was purchased as something my previous wife and I could do together, more or less a last ditch effort to keep the marriage together. Well, at least we didn't decide to have a baby to keep us together! We got separated before I named her, hence the name... "Tiller I'll be Late" which was softened from "Tiller I'm Not Coming Home".

We have a 1977 S2 8.0 that has Elvis Presley’s band logo on the side. The old owner had named it his wife’s name so we changed it to The King. The boat was made the same year that he pasted. Also the first owner was a corp.

Just after purchasing my first boat, a Hunter 336, I was sitting around with power boat friends and they were bragging abotu how quickly they could get from our marina to Put-in-Bay. It's a trip that would take me about 5-6 hours and they were laughing saying they could make it in 45 mintes in their 48ft Sea Ray. I reminded them that it was not in the destination it was in the journey. It hit me right when I said it that it would be the perfect name for my new boat, hence The Journey.

The name for my current boat, a Hunter 44, was just an extension of the first: The Journey continues...

We have been trying to think of a name for the dinghy, kind of a play on The Journey but haven't settled on anything yet. If anyone has any thoughts on a name for it....

None right now Cruiser Don't have on yet
I didn't name my first two boats, a sunfish and hobie cat, just didn't seem like they needed names. Then I moved up to my Catalina 25 and came up with Mein Engel, German for My Angel. My father taught me the water and I'm hoping he is now my guardian angel and I always thought the sails remind me of angel wings.

Some years ago my wife and I were taken to a nearby slough and watched Trumpeter Swans fly in just over our heads to spend the night. At that time a flock of about one hundred swans wintered here in the Pacific Northwest. Ever since that time we've named our boats "Trumpeter". Our hard dinghy (Minto) is named "Cynet" and the Avon inflatable is named the "Ugly Duckling."

Because of "protection," there are now about two thousand swans residing during the winter months. Beautiful birds.

Fine stories all !!
First boat, a Spirit 23, was “Apogee” .. a nice high point in life’s orbit.. The H 34 was named “Shooting Star” when I bought her but I changed the name to “Cloud” with appropriate ceremony.. Playing with sailplanes and airplanes, I always wanted my own cloud .. also a play on my name ..

A boat down the dock from me was named "Royal Flush". You would suspect the owner was into cards or poker, but his company actually manufactured toilets!

"Family Time". Our six-year-old son named the boat because as he told us, "we bought it as a family to sail."

In search of my next boat Palm Harbor, FL
I was driving down the road, and saw a billboard with the name of a restaurant or something, and thought thats not bad, but would be better if I changed the "b" to an "r" and added an "a". The name became "Inara", my wife and I liked the sound of it. We kept referring to our boat as Inara, then we googled the name, and found out that it is a Hindi goddes, and also a character on a TV show. Then I found this quote on the internet

Inara:
Companion.
Courtier.
Confidant.

I thought it fits also for a boat, although I wont tell my wife that one.
