• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

This forum was requested by a couple of users who are really into their weather, as most of us are these days.

Please use this forum for discussions about weather forecasting or weather effects. Please do NOT use it for discussions of storm preparedness, which should be posted in a broader forum, like Ask All Sailors.

Thanks!

It will be interesting to learn how many folk recognize that reference.
I find it odd for a boy who lived on a boat how many tv references you remember.

Must have been the time as a teacher.

I lived in a house for 9 years before I lived on a boat. We had 4 channels. I watched a lot of TV.

I do! Horshack, Vinnie Barbarino, Mister Kotter of course, but I always liked Julie best. Bailey, too, on WKRP. And Mary Ann on Gilligan, naturally. I could see the girl-next-door types acknowledging my existence, whereas the Loni Andersen / Ginger characters left me cold. Well, cooler.

I recognize it. Not that I watched the show that much. The times I did watch it the last 30 seconds of the show with the dialog between him and his wife is what "made it" for me.

Don't forget "All in the Family" and "Mary Tyler Moore"... by comparison, TV shows suck today.

Agree completely. My first two crushes were on girls next door - Peggie Lipton on The Mod Squad and Karen Valentine on Room 222.

It’s amazing how quickly a thread can devolve into something entirely different. Even when the Main Admin specifically said not to let it happen. Oh wait. He’s been dethroned. That HAS to be the reason. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

We should post all weather stuff here, even winter snows.
____
So far. the Jet Stream has been the culprit for the winter time "blues".

The Caribbean remained warm from lack of Hurricane and major storm activity in 2018.

Thus the Gulf of Mexico kept us from only one day below 32 °F along the northern coast.

As the Warm Gulf stream went along the Atlantic Seaboard up to about Virginia it helped melt any snow quickly.

But I suspect the colder run off waters will cool the Gulf and Atlantic seaboard.

El Niño barely started. Our Sun remains quiet or lack of major solar storms.
