This if for all of you who, like me, keep their boat in the back yard. What kind of water do you like to sail on? How small would you go for a day of sailing? I love going out on Lake Michigan but on occasion, when I am desperate to sail, will put into a local lake, 830 acres. Just curious if anyone else sails the smaller waters. Chris M25

I sail on...

The largest and oldest natural lake in the country, Clear Lake, and I also sail on probably the deepest, Lake Tahoe. Then there is the ever challenging San Francisco Bay. Nothing small here. I love the big water

When you live in some parts of the country, if you don't sail on the 800 acre lakes you don't sail. Here in Indianapolis, I beleive the largest actual sailing area in any of the local lakes is about 400 acres. For day sails at 5 mph even small lakes can be enjoyable. With large lakes at 5 mph you cover about the same area.

small, medium and largish

4 miles from home 850, Scotts Flat 30 mi. away 4700, Bullards Bar We usually go about 55 mi. to Lake Oroville which is 15,810 acres and stay the weekend. When I get a working jib and a radio (next year Santa?) I'll head for Tahoe and the SF Bay for some "real" sailing

Demensions of sailing water...

-Clear Lake has more than 43,000 surface acres. -Lake Tahoe Basin is 205000 acres in size. -San Francisco Bay, 50 mi (80 km) long and from 3 to 13 mi (4.8–21 km) wide. Now that is some water huh?

Lake Tahoe revised

According to the USGS, Lake Tahoe is a bit smaller than the Tahoe Basin at 191 sq. mi. or 122,240 acres. Still on the big side of 800 acre lakes. and windy
