I'm interested in purchasing an H-26 water ballast 1994. I was told by the Marina owner there may be a problem in keeping the boat in salt water for the whole season (6 months); specifically concerning odors in the water ballast and growth of organisms, etc. What is the experience with this? This is the first I've heard of a concern. Do odors seep into the cabin after being kept in the water (particularly salt water) long-term? Please post a response ASAP! Thanks, Joe

Ballast Tank Odors

I have a Hunter 260, which I keep in a marina for the season. I have never had odors from the ballast tank find their way into the cabin on this boat or my former boat, a MacGregor 26. There will certainly be some kinds of critters growing in there. You will be sure to notice the odor when you drain the tank at the end of the season. It really smells bad! There have been some suggestions here in the Forum on this subject. Check the archives for ways to keep the critters under control. You also have a Hunter dealer not far from you in NJ. I'm sure he has some suggestions. Ralph C. Regar S/V Shambala

Smell

I keep my H240 in the water of the Chesapeake 7 months a year. No problem with odor if you use a couple cups of bleech in the ballast tank. You could also fill the tank with fresh water. I've chosen the bleech methon, and never had a problem.

Odor Problem

I have a HUNTER 240 that I keep in salt water for 5 months. HUNTER recommended that I fill my ballast tank with fresh water and use a quart of bleach. Last season I had no odor problems and even when they pulled the boat out for the winter, the water was clear and odor free. John

Where On Barnegat Bay ?

Joe, I've had my h26 since 94,and I've used chlorine bleach every season with no problem. I use about a cup or so. Where on the bay do you sail? I'm from the Silverton section of Toms River. Good Sailing, Pat

Response to Pat

Pat, Ironically I have been keeping my old boat(O'day 22") at Santo Marine, right at the end of Toms River. I am switching to Mariner's Marina in the town of Barnegat. I was seriously thinking of purchasing a 94 H-26, but my wife & I are still novices at sailing & I have read that this model is very tender & tends to heel easily. I have read also that the Bay where the inlet is located is exceptionally windy in the afternoons. We never felt that way up at Toms River.

1 year now, no problem

I keep mine in the water all year. Salt water that is. I filled it with fresh to begin with and simply add about 2 cups of clorine every 6 months. No smell (and I do smell for it at the fill port). No problem. I plan to keep it in the water for at least another year before I pull it. Have considered pumping it out and refilling it but, doesn't seem to be a reason for it yet. ??????

Good Survey

I would be more concerned about getting a good survey. Be sure to have the hull checked for voids in the fiberglass near or below the waterline. Be sure to get surveyor yourself, not one that the marina suggests. Be sure to have the surveyor look at the sails. Good luck.
