Stereo system has pair of speakers in four locations: fwd cabin, salon, aft cabin and on the arch. Volume for each pair independently controlled by a double gang rheostat (potentiometer) rated at 8ohm, 30watts. Since a couple of these have become nonfunctional I'd like to replace them. Can't find a product like this anywhere--tried the internet and electronics stores like Fry's and Radio Shack. People there ask "what's that" and thus ends the conversation. Anybody have any ideas where I can find this type of volume control or maybe a substitute that will work? Thanks, Bruce

lots of sources

if you know the specs, you can probably find it on the link below under potentiometers or do a generic search for potentiometers.

Try Hunter Parts

Hunter has used these pots in several of the boats for years. I bet they would have them. Could be a little higher than you wanted to pay. I needed the lift and turn latches for the rear lazarettes and hunter had them. When I got them I looked on ebay and could have had them for 1/4 the cost. Bill

Contact Cleaner

I had the same problem and my solution for my 420 2001 Hunter was spray with contact cleaner and then rotate the knob very quickly back and forth (180 degrees) until the contacts conducted. Move the knob to different areas of position. I may have use that procedure 1000 times to get them to work. Of course if the circuits or pot is broken this would not work.

This control might help

http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=MCMProducts&category%5Fname=3831197&product%5Fid=50%2D7880 This link might take you to a volume control that will work. The one on the foto is the less expensive and oldest that I know, maybe that's why is so hard to find. at www.mcminone.com you will find all kind of volume controls, be shure not to purchase the 70volts one, those won't work with a normal receiver. And Bruce, The last one of those I bought was at

Radio Shack. Sure it was a long time ago. But nothing has changed my opinion about Radio Shack. Their advertising slogan is something like 'You've got questions, we've got answers'. Well I've been a consumer of electronic gadgets for about 40 years. And during that time, not once have I gotten an answer from a Radio Shack employee. The response you recieved is universal. They hire 'em by the pound. IMHO, of course.

Stereo L PAD

I did a Google search for STEREO L PAD and found this page. And yes, make sure it's an 8 ohm L pad, not one for a 70v line. Is the pad just noisy? If so, try to clean it. Just about any tuner/component spray will do. Radio Shack stores around here carry De-Oxit spray. Catalog #: 64-4338 I've used it for twenty years. Great stuff. It's best used for connectors, but does somewhat well with pots. Don't over do it. Just use a small amount. The red stuff leaves a protective coating. Radio Shack... "You've got questions. We've got dumb looks"
