Hi Vega owners:

I first started this conversation with David in Alaska and have been
getting some other reply. Well old faithful was out of my boat when I
bought it and in its place was a BMW D-12. Great motor, poor charging
system, poor hook up on raw water pump. The BMW needs to be rebuilt
which is no problem just money. However I have a Yanmar 1GM, not a 1
GM-10 and would like to know if any Vega owners have put a 1 GM in their
boat. When I tool ownership of this boat I also received every news
letter the Vega club printed and remember reading of an owner having a
1GM for power. Is this true and if so what is the outcome. Also I am
concerned about the distance between the shaft and the shaft log. Has
anybody rebored and installed an new shaft log. The org. tube does not
allow for a bearing with enough rubber or shaft clearance.

Mike,

My Vega was repowered by the previous owner in '86 with a Vetus 2.05
(10.5hp). The combi system was replaced with a 1" shaft and a special
Teflon cutlass bearing. The 1" shaft and the Teflon cutlass bearing did not
work well. Normal engine vibrations caused the shaft to hit the inside edges
of the shaft log. Subsequently, the shaft size was reduce to 3/4" using a
standard 3/4' cutlass bearing. The cutlass bearing outside diameter is
about 1.25" which was machined down to fit the 30MM shaft log. The cutlass
bearing is held solid by friction and by a (1/4 X20) allen set screw tapped
into the shaft log from the port side. I found that having a standard
cutlass bearing turned down to fit the original shaft log was easier than
reboring the shaft log for a larger shaft and cutlass bearing. The 3/4"
shaft is quite enough to handle the 10hp engine.
