I am looking at a Catalina 31 with a 26HP Universal Diesel Engine. The max rpms are running at about 1900. The owner indicated it is a faulty injector and he is having it cleaned or replaced. Anyone heard of this problem? Is it a biggie? He seemed taken aback when I told him I would not have the boat surveyed until after this was addressed, and if he decided to clean the injectors that I would need that work warranteed in the sales agreement. Too hard? Not hard enough?

That's fair!! That engine should top out at some-

thing over 3000 rpm. And should run up to full speed in a few seconds "no load".

Could be...

It could just be barnacles on the prop or a very dirty bottom too. I find it very hard to believe, with the multi stage filtration system on the 31, that an injector would already be bad. I've had a M-25 with over 3k hours and the original injectors and my current engine a Westerbeke has 2600 hours on the original injectors. Either he changed the prop and it's the incorrect size/pitch or the boat is heavily fouled. How does it idle? Is it smoking really bad at idle or in neutral?? if not it may not be a fuel/injector problem at all. the M-25 is a very, very reliable engine as are all of the Kubota based engines. Will it run to 3k rpm in neutral?

Hummmm

Reguardless, it shouldn't be a Big problem (as in pistons or crank bearings). It probably is something relatively minor unless you heard rapping. I think you are right to tell him to fix it before you spend money on a survey. I wouldn't concern myself with warrenty just an explaination of what was wrong after it's fixed.

Ross has a good point.

Will the engine rev up to 2-3000 rpm with no load? The question of the owners attitude changes with how low the price is. If it'a a hell of a deal, the owner can expect some slack. If you're paying market price, you have the right to expect fully functional and what's broke fixed by the owner.

Just went thru this with my boat

And I'm with Maine Sail cause if the prop has any barnicals on it the result will be you can't get the engine to top rpm or if it the prop is over pitched the same result, like all said just rev the motor in neutral and see what the rpms do and that will tell you.

I agree with Maine Sail

We went from the factory spec 2-blade to the factory spec 3-blade on our Catalina 36 with the M25 Universal. It revs 3000 in neutral but tops at just below 2600 rpm with the new prop and smoke while underway so we think it is overpitched. We haven't yet taken the prop off to check if the pitch was mistakenly labeled. I guess your pitch would have to be way of the mark to get you down to 1900 rpm. How many hours on the diesel?

Agree with both Maine Sail & Jim

I just went thru this with my ODay and a 3 blade prop could not get over 1600 rpm, changed the prop back to its original 2 blade and now all is well. Also any barnicals or algea on the prop and bottom will cause the same effect

Check the throttle cable

Always check the most easily gotten to things first. As mainsail said, the bottom full of barnacles, or prop. Also take a peek at the throttle cable and linkage to make sure it is opening all the way. Either way, it would be the owners responsibility to correct the problem, to your satisfaction.

Engine RPM

The pitch of the prop is what will end up in determining the RPM the engine will turn up, not whether it is a two blade or three blade. Either one, if it has too much pitch, will keep the RPM down. I'm not sure how much effect barnacles will have on RPM, I do know for a fact they have a very dramatic effect on boat speed.
