I am in the process of installing this new VHF in my boat. I was planning on using my Garmin GPS 76 to plug into it to allow the full functionality of DSC. When I unpacked the radio on the boat I noticed that there is no jack provided for plugging the GPS in. WTF! All the engineers at Uniden provided is a multi strand (5) color coded wire that seems like it ought to have a serial port connector attached to it. The owners manual provides no indication as to which color wire is what and does not even mention this feature other than to say that it can be done. The whole point of the new DSC technology is to be able to transmit (and recieve) your GPS coordinates if you (or someone else) are in trouble. I know I have the cheaper model that does not have its own internal GPS but come on - this should be easy to set up and not require a networking specialist, rocket scientist or brain surgeon. How long would Dell or Apple stay in business if all their boxes had unlabelled miscellaneous wires sticking out of them? I know that the engineers at Uniden had no idea which GPS this radio would be hooked up to so they just left off the input connection jack. Well, it is a computer serial jack that I need to connect the Garmin GPS 76 with. These engineers are lucky that sailors dont like messy wires sticking out of boxes and will spend the time to figure out how to make their products work. I sense that a number of frustrating visits to WM and phone calls to Uniden's customer service are in my future before I get this resolved to my liking. Anyone else have this experience yet installing a DSC radio??

I've installed many GPSs and VHFs. Not one mfg makes them plug and play - even in their own lineup. at least not yet. You'll have to read the manuals, and connect the rights wires.....

Do I feel stupid now? Uh huh.

The breakout of which wire is which was not where I thought it would be in the owners manual (pg.21 NMEA tech setup). Thanks Rodney, for taking the time to disabuse me of my error(s). Also, I found the Garmin cable you mentioned (010-10082-00) on Defender for $18.99 (WM = $29.99). Do you know how long this cable is? I am planning on mounting the vhf unit in the cabin near the companionway and would like to still be able to view the GPS in the cockpit without drilling too many holes in the old gal. Thanks for the reminder to register the MMSI #. That is certainly on my honey-do list. As for interfacing a laptop, I am still trying to master my stone knives and bearskins so this activity will be on my honey-dont list (pretty long list by the way!). Rodney, thanks again.

I think

I think the cable is around 6 feet long. As Stu says, the cable can be extended easily. You might try GPSgeek for the cable $12.95). See link below. Anyway, glad to help.
