Hi All in the UK - I have an Origo 3000 stove and am fed up with the smell and blacking of pans using Meths. Have any of you obtained a licence from HM Customs for a licence for IDA. I have applied and been refused a licence. If I can show a predident by one of you having a licence I will be able to appeal. Help much appreciated.

In the UK we try and stop drunks drinking Meths by adding a bad taste and blue colour. In the UK we have to have al government license to purchase pure IDA. I cannot find any boater with a license. The government must think we are all sailing drunks!!

I'm really confused. You can't get denatured alcohol in the UK without a license? Isn't that the same as rubbing alcohol?

Denatured alcohol isn't the same as rubbing alcohol in the US and shouldn't
be used as such.

There are three basic types of alcohol (actually there are more, but three
are common).

Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol) is what is the drinkable type, it is made from
fermenting sugar (such as in grain or other food products).

Isopropyl and Methanol are the other main types. Rubbing alcohol in the US
is Isypropol diluted with water (about 70 alcohol). Both of these are
poisonous.

Denatured Alcohol is Ethanol, but has a substance added to it that makes it
poisonous -- sometimes methanol or even acetone -- usually about 5%.
Denatured alcohol is for industrial purposes. It is made undrinkable so as
to avoid paying spirit taxes as would be paid with pure ethanol. You also
don't want to use Denatured Alcohol as a rubbing alcohol since some it can
be absorbed through the skin.

Thanks for you chemical knowledge and putting the correct information in respect of the stove and the fuel to be used.

So, which is the best for use in alcohol stoves?

Denatured Alcohol since it is mostly pure ethanol alcohol (but that can
vary too as some have a higher methanol and other additives than others).
The best kind is the kind sold in marine stores especially for alcohol
stoves, not the cheapest however.. Also Camping supply stores have stove
fuel. It you get some alcohol from a hardware store and don't know how good
it is, put a little in an empty tuna can and burn it. Good fuel have little
to no residue (probably depends on the additives put in to make it
denatured i guess). One thing too is that the Orego is not a pressurized
stove, so there aren't jets to get clogged as with most camping stoves. It
is probably a little more forgiving

Don't use Isopropyl rubbing alcohol as it has water in it so it can't be
used. You could use drinking alcohol (Everclear it is named and it is 190
proof only available in a few states), but it is pricey and hard to get.
However it can also be used as a medicinal. You could use really good Vodka
I suppose, but that is pretty expensive too. Or, you could just make up
some moonshine, but then you'd probably get in trouble with the Feds.

It is interesting to note that the very first Ford Model T ran on ethanol,
way back before 1910. Originally gasoline was considered a byproduct for
the petroleum companies as they were mostly after the oil. But then the
internal combustion engine was invented, and here we are today.

In the US you are allowed to make a few gallons of alcohol for your own use.
My brother makes rice whiskey, last time I checked, his youtube how to video had over 20,000 hits, which, unfortunately, makes
it more popular than most sailing videos. tg

Careful buying "stove fuel" in camping supply stores as it is usually
Coleman Stove Fuel (which is basically unleaded gasoline). Put that in your
Origo and it mite give your boat a whole new look.

In the U.S. I've had good luck with a brand called Kleen Strip, sold in
hardware stores in California. I've used it in my pressurized stove with
no burner clogging. I had less luck with the blue colored stove fuel sold
as a marine stove product, I did have some burner clogging. Stove fuels do
vary...one hardware store denatured alcohol was so stinky I had to throw
it away...
