Trident 101 vs. Shields 101 Sanitation Hose

I am replacing my aft sanitation hoses since they have become calcified too bad to redeem. The original hose is Trident 101. 20 years later: zero permeation, so I want to replace with the same. I stopped at West Marine and the rep said that Shields 101 was the same as Trident and that Shields purchased them and they were one and the same company. I decided to do some research and the information provided me appears erroneous. According to the Trident website, they are competitors. An interesting factoid is that the Shields family lost their company in a hostile take over and started Trident years ago. Maybe the SBO Chandlery folks can verify the information.

Peggy promotes using a cup of vinegar as a final flush or weekly to retard calcium build up (but not leaving it there, rather flushing it out). I only started doing that a couple of years ago. Given that my 1 1/2 hose is now less than 1/2 inch, I am very interested in some exploration of how to retard that build up. Maybe we can interest Thinwater in a Practical Sailor test?

Rick I was researching the sanitation hose issue and show you on line. I just finished exposing my 15 year old hose getting ready to replace it. I looked in the WM catalog and show the price wow. What hose did you end up with WM only shows Shields?

Thinwater did address this in his article reviewing joker valves. He recommends CLR over vinegar. Check Defender for the hose and much better pricing...

If you have no permeation, try running muriatic acid thru the hose. Let that sit for an hour and flush it clean. Might take a few shots to get it all out. Save money and hassles

i just installed 33 ft of the triden hose on my head and am glad i got that brand...it fits the connections and bends easly...i used black in the locker areas and whit in the exposed areas........

Solstice and Mainesail covered it. I did have Shields 101 installed at one point :cry:.

There are some newer hoses in the field that look very promising, but we can only tick off the years and wait to see.

I'm curious as to whether Novaflex is one of the hoses that is being tracked long term. My boat came with this stuff from the factory and I'm keeping a close eye on it. I replumbed my last boat with the tried and true Trident as this is not a job I prefer to do on a regular basis. I will say the Novaflex is much easier to work with though...

No, we have not tracked Novaflex and I have no expereince with it. They seem to make 3 types; do you know which one? One of the white vinyl hoses or the green rubber hose?

Today I replaced the Shields with Trident, twenty feet of stinky hose. Boat smells a whole lot better.

It is the #148. I had to re route my pumpout hose and when cutting it noticed it is quite thick and reinforced with a helix of fiberglass strand. This allowed for a good amount of flexibility. Time will tell....
