I want to move my traveler ahead about two feet and get it out of my cockpit and companionway. I am wondering if this will impair the functionality of the traveler. It seems like a pretty straight forward project so I am worried I may not have thought this all the way through. I am not worried too much about the installation of it as I am pretty handy, my big concern is how it will effect the traveler. We have never had any problems adjusting it while under load in the past and I think we have a 4:1 on it. It would be moving the point it connects to the boom from 9 feet to 7.

Check with Hunter

Their designers will let you know. I have the same problem and would like to set the traveller and boom up with a snap shackle so that I can attach the boom to the toe rail when at anchor/moored and move the boom off to port when I have my fly rigged. I checked with a rigger to determine the size of the snap shackle.

Paul

Thanks for the reply but I am not so sure Hunter will help me out as I have a C&C 27.

Go to this web site and it will give you some ideas. Did my boat last year and was real good move for me. ahttp://garhauermarine.com/index.cfm

Quick Math

The distance from the boom attachment point on the mast to the sheet line attachment on the boom is the lever arm distance. The force required to "hold" the pressure placed on the boom by the wind is a linear function of the lever arm distance. Thus by reducing the distance from 9 feet to 7 feet you are increasing the load on the sheet line by a factor 22 percent.

Harken

Paul probably meant Harken. Might need big boat equipment if you're in the first quarter to third of the boom and spread the load with backing plates instead of washers. Harken reference sites for figuring and dreaming, but garhauer would be great. http://www.harken.com/rigtips/travelers.php http://www.harken.com/traveler/traveler.php Dan

increas the purchase...

from 4:1 to 6:1. Spread the load on the boom.. 3 single blocks spaced along the boom converging to a triple on the car. Do not arch track over cabin, keep it straight. make control lines for traveler convenient or you won't use them.
