Tired Mainsail..?

I'm pretty new to sailing so bear with me. But the mainsail on my newly acquired '78 Pday 23, looks a little tired. At the bottom of the sail it bulges out probably about 4-5 inches and no amount of outhaul or downhaul will flatten it out. My questions are: 1. AM I right in judging the sail is spent? 2. How much of a difference will a new sail make? 3. Where do I go to get a new sail? 4. How much should I expect to pay? Thanks in advance!

Well - its hard to tell if your mailsail is spent. I would consider getting someone else to look at it. As far as how much difference it would make the answer in my experience is tons. Getting decent sail shape increases pointing ability and decreases unnecessary heel. I replaced the main on my Catalina last summer and the difference is night and day. My daysailer already had new canvas when I bought her. A new sail will likely run you about $700 or so. Try Karissa at 206-WEB SAIL, or try Stuart Marine for off the shelf stuff. They still make the Mariner so they may have sails available for immediate shipment. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

I concur

I have asked the same question and heard the same answers - new sails are frequently considered the best investment an owner can make for his boat. Happy sailing! Kelly s/v "Daisy Sail"
