I recently purchased a tiller tamer but it requires clam cleats for installtion. Does anyone have a recommended position for these cleats on the stern?

If I remember, the diagram shows them mounted on top of the transom. But, on my H23, I couldn't get the correct angles because the top of the transom is too narrow. So, I mounted them vertically on the inside wall of the stern. I posted a picture last year - should be in the archives. There is an optimum up-down orientation to get maximum holding power, but I can't remember which way it was without looking. Anyway, if you mounted them "upside down," you would simply unscrew them and turn them around.

I mounted my cleats to my vertical stern rail. It provided a stronger mounting point and was at a better level with my tiller.

Was this tiller tamer question for a 146 or 170? We don't have a "vertical stern rail", do we? I thought the photo on the attached link gave a good idea for a cost effective (read "free") tiller tamer idea. :)
