• Sailing is all about the Weather.

Big into the exploration of Atlantic Hurricanes since Katrina came uninvited into his world, James (Jim) Gurley (JamesG161) has followed every Tropical Storm birthed in Atlantic, Gulf and Caribbean waters since. Being a boater, he knows that we often need more time to prepare than we get from the TV weather folk. Jim relies on the science of storm development to share early warning info with friends and fellow boaters.

Early in 2018, Jim and John Shepard, (JSSailem) started to chat about the weather data available. John asked Jim to help forecast Pacific NW storms, and this morphed into discussions on weather forecasting.

For John, sailing in the PNW is sometimes hit and miss. One day is ugly, then a string of beautiful days but no wind, followed by a series of blue-sky days and 12 knot breezes. Being ready for those great sailing days means you need to look to the Pacific Ocean and what is brewing. John has been into Pacific NW Weather since the 1970’s when his first PNW November storm hit bringing more than 40 days and 40 nights of continual rain.

Together we want to share information, new APPs, safety, and thoughts about letting the weather help you. Identify some of the resources for sailors and help prepare you for your next sailboat outing.

It is far better to go out on the water knowing what to expect in weather terms, than to be out on the water and see dark ominous clouds suddenly appear, unprepared.

It just seems unfair to my spring break.

Unfair to The golf course?

Where’s the early spring?

Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this year. As the legend goes, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Feb. 2, six more weeks of winter weather lay ahead; no shadow indicates an early spring.

When life gives you snow, make snow sailors!

A little snow didn't slow down the 2019 Winter Cruise Adventure. What's stopping you now? :poke:

250 miles from the boat and sea. I know a negligible distance.

Sounds like the "Snap On" and "Snap Off" Winter is still controlling up north.

We are seeing less of the Polar Jet Steam down south.

Spring has sprung here..:)

Sunny at the boat yesterday but that wind was biting cold. It was 24 when I woke yesterday. Now it's 26. At that rate, it should reach over 200 by the middle of June.

This is the time of year a full cover and frame earns its keep. They're expensive, however, even when it is in the 30s and the wind is blowing, under the cover it will be comfortable. It is easy to over dress for those days. When the temps are in the 50s I'm in a t-shirt and elsewhere in the yard folks are still bundled up against the wind.

Here in central Texas, it's hard to know what season it is. There are very few trees that are deciduous. But I have one just outside the door.
So here is November 22, 2019.
