Stern rail thingamagigs and a cleat

Hey all. Just looking for some communal head-scratching on this one. I've since learned that the thingamagigs are clamp-on fairleads (we had thought they were maybe some sort of drop-in mount for something like a grill or a flagpole). Now that we know we're wondering what the heck the intended purpose may be back there? The best we can come up with is maybe anchoring off the stern but then why TWO fairleads?

We're asking because usually innovation makes some aspect of life easier and we don't want to undo something clever.

Perhaps to run a line to assist in raising motor and another to assist in raising swim ladder so you don't have to bend over so far? Just a guess.

We give up. The starboard one is going to come off since we're cutting a section of the rear rail out for easier access/egress with the swim ladder. Ordered the fittings today, once they arrive we'll install then and then heat bend some PVC/ABS to shape so we can have some stainless bent up for us. Theoretically it should be plug-n-play....

Previous owners do crazy things, as anyone who's bought a boat from me will attest. The fairleads may well have been used to mount something that is no longer on the boat. If you don't need them, take them off.
