In all my years on the water, I've heard "small craft advisory" thousands of times....but still don't know what they consider small craft. Anyone know? MPJ

My training boat was small

A Santana 25 - fun but definately small. The official Washington Post definition: Winds in excess of 20 knots (23 mph), and less than 34 knots (39 mph), that may cause hazardous conditions for operators of small vessels. I know I can sail in 20 kts in my boat w/o (too much) fear.

Small craft

I should have looked deeper. Washington Post: Small Craft Generally a vessel under 65 feet in length

What CG captain told me

My friend who is a licenced coast guard captain (spent several years in the coast guard) and works for a hunter dealer told me that "small craft advisory" is for boats 27 feet or smaller. Roc

Or perhaps

My instructor of some years back was right in saying it means power boats go in and sail boats go out.
