Shore Power Cable Connection

I'm a new owner of a 2008 Beneteau 40. We're really excited about the boat and looking forward to many great years. I moved the boat from her old home marina last week to the new marina and I have to do the shore power cable juggling act now to figure out the right setup. The old cables are 50ft and I only need 15 feet so I am going to sell the old cables somewhere and get new cables fitted for my boat. The new marina has 50A service. The old marina had two 30A services. The boat needs two service cables. So I need a Y-adapter somewhere in the mix. Does it matter if the Y-adapter is plugged directly into my boat or whether the adapter comes from the marina and then I run two power cables to my boat plugs? See where I am going here? Buy one 50A cable and one adapter versus buy two 30A cables and one adapter.

Any feedback appreciated. I'm sure I will be back on this forum. Thank you.

Might think about keeping a cord or two, if you visit other harbors you'll run into all kinds of power configurations and placement. Even within one marina they will sometimes have different power supplies, some older places you may even be on 15 amp outlets.

Have you considered going to www.marinco.com? You know, the folks who actually sell the stuff we use? They also have a great section in the WM catalog. Congrats on you new boat. Ted/s right --- think about it.

It doesn't matter if I understand your question. However, I would suggest keeping the 2 30As and getting a 50A to 2-30As split to use at the power tower. The reason is that will give you more flex at various marinas. I have the same boat (love it) and dock it about 10' from the power tower. I simple loop the extra cable over the horse shoe hook right above the boat's power inlet. I suppose you can get 2 shorter 30As. Suggest you check prices of various adaptors and cable combinations. The prices might make your decision.

Enjoy the new boat.

Keep the longer cables in your locker for transient travel. You will find easier access to 30A service than 50A service when you explore other marinas and docks, so buy a 50A splitter, and short cables for your slip. When you travel, carry the 50A splitter just in case that is what all that is available, you still have your two 30A cables with you. If you get to some dock with only single 30A service, you can decide if you want AC or House power. If all you have is a 50A cable that choice is not available. Understand?

I agree with keeping the 50 ft 30 amp cables for use while away from home port and purchasing a 50 amp spliter made by Marinco.
I bought mine on Ebay from a guy in FL.
